How this holiday makes a difference

This abbey, having lain empty for years after the monks left, has been restored to apartments that allow the ordinary person to experience the history, archaeology and architecture of this magnificent building.

During the restoration of the abbey buildings the developers have taken lengths to protect the wildlife of the vicinity with heated bat boxes being put in several of the loft spaces and boxes placed in trees around the grounds. Certain trees with potential bat roost sites have been retained as have the majority of the mature trees of landscape value.

The developers have chosen not to use chemical treatments in the rehabilitation of the historic fabric of the buildings, choosing a holistic approach instead.

We encourage our visitors to use the large choice of restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as the recycling facilities, located within the village.

We have been environmentally aware for the past 40 years and have used Ecover products for all of that time, long before we started self catering. Our care in water saving dates back similarly, to when we had cesspool drainage, when every drop wasted had to be emptied at a price; we soon learnt to be economical with water. Ecover is used in all the cottages we own or manage.

We have also purchased 90 acres of pasture and woodland to return the pasture to native woods. We have planted 20,000 young trees, some of which are now over 10 feet tall. We look forward to seeing it a fully fledged wood within the next decade with all the associated wildlife that that will bring. There are already very many species of birds in the newly regenerating habitat.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying in the monastery & the wonderful views of Loch Ness.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check what's open in the area i.e. castles if going out of season. Take your bikes if possible as fantastic cycle tracks. Also would have booked some online shopping for when we arrived as not much provisions in village and supermarkets an hours drive.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - for cafes etc though not much food shopping available and a lot of shops were closed as out-of-season.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good value for money - no complaints. Shame wasn't double glazed though.

Read the operator's response here:

It was good to hear what you had to say, Jenny, and the one adverse comment is echoed by ourselves (some shops & attractions are closed out of season!! We have bemoaned this for years). We take on board your suggestion of online shopping for your arrival and will suggest it to visitors before they arrive so they may choose to do this or shop in Inverness prior to driving to the apartment, if they come that way. Thank you. Double glazing - we would have liked it too - we tried to insist on it as we want to get a Green Tourism Business Award and double glazing is one of the most basic of green measures. However, as it is a Grade A listed building, the developers were not allowed to fit double glazing - the windows had to be as they were, prior to the development. We believe we do have the option to fit secondary glazing but we have yet to investigate this possibility. This would still have to gain permission from the council to go ahead.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The Abbey is beautifully sited just at the south end of Loch Ness and Fort Augustus is a pretty village

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take waterproof boots/wellies and midge repellent!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Difficult to see how this benefited locals apart from local eateries in which we would have to take shelter to escape the rain. Also it's virtually impossible to get around without a car.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very wet!
