How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We follow strict adherence in providing organic food to our clients and cultivate grains, vegetables and fruits using organic practices for our own needs.

Solar power is used to provide a significant part of our energy requirements. Gas is used for cooking and water, herbs and oil heating for treatment. We do have CFL lights for energy savings. Solar lanterns are used for garden lights. Waste is recycled to prepare compost for the plants and farming. We have rain harvesting big open tanks and ponds to collect rain water.

Community

Regular employment is given to about 10 local people (in vegetable gardening, environment cleaning and waste management). Guests hire bicycles & the services of local people, and we provide guided tours to the nearby museum, cultural art centre and heritage enriched other sights. Local craftsmen sell their artworks, products and art form sculptures to our guests and receive financial benefits.

We strive to provide maximum benefits to the local community and artists by promoting their highly enriched heritage on art forms that are unique in nature and need to be preserved. We facilitate interaction between the local people and the guests by taking them to the nearby public utilities such as library, sports clubs and places of worships.

We have 2 orphanages nearby and twice yearly one day’s complete meal to them is provided by us. We also facilitate our guests to buy their artworks, paintings and handicrafts to help these children.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The pick up from the airport was very welcome, although the two hour drive a little scary at times but that is India for you. The staff were quite friendly and did try hard to make my stay as relaxing as possible... as long as I fitted in with their routine. The room was a good size and cleaned daily although I should have put ear plugs in my case as the electric switches quite noisily between generators at all hours. The treatment staff were friendly and on the whole good. A shame that on the last day they dropped the bottle during my head oil treatment so rather than being totally relaxed I was hanging off the ceiling!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The food was fair but the menu repeated on about day 3 so became quite monotonous and there was no explanation as to what it was or why we were eating it. Apart from the rice soup which has weight loss properties, I worked out how with this one; once you've had it 4 days in a row you just don’t eat it! The yoga was a joke and I stupidly didn't say anything sooner, the only other person at the resort stopped going but I tried to get the most out of it by asking questions and sharing my yogic goals but to no avail. We found out that for the yoga courses they do get someone else in.

I think if my expectations had not been set so high by Mr Menon in his speedy and incredibly courteous replies then I would not have felt so disappointed. If I had been told there was no yoga but only meditation in a strange Indian English, that they would rather you didn't speak/spend time with the other guests (sorry guest), that there was no real space for any sunbathing (the grass was over grown and down some perilous stairs), that during monsoon season the walk ways were dangerous and pipes leaked and had not been repaired, that there would be no explanation of any of the treatments, the food or indeed anything relating to ayurveda and there would be nothing to take home to read to remind you of what you had done and why, that there would be no information at the resort about the resort - that I would have to use the slow internet to check the resorts own website, that they say Yes there is a specialist shop rather than admitting it is not possible to buy local hand made goods in the area, and any trips would take about 5 days to organise and the prices would change daily... if I had known all that then I would not have been so disappointed.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It certainly helped the local taxi drivers as the two trips we managed to get out on (which were disasters) supported them both times. In fact I requested to go shopping but only to a place that had local goods made by local people - I was taken to three shops all of which sold mass produced souvenirs, I was quite upset.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Disappointing is the word that sums up my Indian holiday. Such a shame really as I had gone to great lengths to try to ensure that I was clear in what I was looking for before I had confirmed my booking. What I had been looking for: Relaxing, healing, experiencing new culture, meeting new people, sunbathing, learning and improving my yoga skills. Learning about ayurveda - to enable me to use this on my return to the UK. I am a student nutritional therapist so I thought it would be a bit of a bus man's holiday. This was certainly not what I received.

Read the operator's response here:

Ms. Lisa, until the last couple of day of her stay was in high mood She could not get some special bangles (north Indian local make) from our area, so her trips to do shopping was not successful. Her complaints about yoga classes were in fact somewhat factual. As our Yoga Master had gone for a refreshment course, we had arranged a new yoga teacher who was not proficient in English language. Now our Yoga Master is back from his course. You might have seen on past reviews about the high remarks that we have received from other clients. I am sure this was one off incident hence you will appreciate it. Ms. Lisa had come to the resort on the high monsoon time and the lawn was not able to cut due to logging water. This had made the lawn little over grown. In fact she was explained on this and I thought she understood the situation. She had opted for weight reduction programme and hence the food was special for her. Moreover, during ayurvedic treatment, meals are swatic (fully veg) and spice free. Our centre is located river-side and no beach nearby. She has visited our website and location details before she had subscribed our package. I appreciate her concern and will do our best to address the points she has raised to the best of our ability.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most enjoyable part of my holiday was the ayurvedic treatments that I had. The staff at the resort were also so nice, they couldn't do enough for you and always had a smile on their faces. I also felt like I was staying with family as that is how they made you feel. I really enjoyed the yoga every morning, the yoga tutor was excellent. Mr Menon the owner of the resort was very welcoming and would take time out to come and chat to us, Dr Vidhya (one of the ayurvedic doctors) was very helpful and was always around for anything you needed.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I think it is important to let people know that this is not just a holiday resort but a ayurvedic treatment resort. You are assessed by ayurvedic Doctors and prescribed medication and treatments according to your problem.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It appeared to as most of the staff at the resort were local.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent! I loved it and would love to back again sometime.

I do feel it benefited local people as all of the staff were local and they didn't seem to impact on the environment in any detrimental way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would say average for what it was, as I said don't expect anything more than the basic amenities.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I very much enjoyed the yoga sessions in the early morning which took place in a pavillion overlooking the river and paddy fields. With the mist over the river and sounds of birds, it was a magical experience.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be aware that there may not be any other non-Indian residents which, as there is not a lot to do in the evenings, can be quite isolating if you are travelling alone.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I couldn't see direct impacts on the local people or environment but many of the staff were local so it is providing jobs in the community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.
