The resort employs over 50% from the local community and assists in local construction of infrastructure. Within the resort, recycling of waste is paramount along with the use of local produce including fish and all vegetables. We encourage our guests to leave footprints in the sand and not carbon footprints.
Gazi Bay resort is located in a protected bay known for its mangroves and unspoilt beaches; we jealousy protect this area. Rich in bird and sea life, Gazi Bay is one of the largest mangrove areas along the Kenyan coast. Part of protecting this area is ensuring the ever growing and encroaching tourism trade is monitored and controlled properly. As one of two resorts along the Gazi Bay area, we ensure motorised access is controlled and no unauthorised fishing takes place.
Gazi Bay also offers deep sea and in shore fishing through its sister company, Ocean Drifters, which was established in 1990. In conjunction with Gazi Bay, Ocean Drifters prides itself in offering exhilarating fishing trips as well as ensuring that some of the ever dwindling types of fish, including marlin, sailfish and some tuna varieties, are tagged and released. First-time fisher folk will receive that all important picture to prove it wasn’t just a fish tale and they will also have the satisfaction of knowing that the released fish will live to fight another day.
We have minimised the carbon foot print of the resort by the following measures-
- All furniture and fixtures are from local areas thus ensuring local economy gains.
- There are no plastic bags on site. Interwoven grass bags are used instead.
- There are no plastic water bottles on site.
- Produce is procured from local farmers all within cycling distance thus reducing need for motorized vehicles.
- Tents are located as close to beach as possible to reduce reliance on air-conditioners, but using sea breeze as natures way of cooling.
- BBQ charcoal is sourced from suppliers using re-growth plots such a teak trees
- Our staff are sourced from local community thereby reducing travel and the need to use transport. Our staff are encouraged to use bicycles.
We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
