Organic farmstay accommodation in Somerset, England

How this holiday makes a difference

We have farmed organically since 2001. We are part of the countryside stewardship scheme and have instigated a large environmental programme over the last 4 years including the planting of hundreds of metres of indigenous hedging, new broadleaved woodland trees, the digging out & restoration of natural spring fed lakes & ponds re-discovered from old maps, planting 6m field margin buffer zones & over wintering stubble fields to increase the bio-diversity which has led to huge increases in the local population of insects, birds and small mammals. This year we have had the first hares back for nearly 40 years!

Our B&B, self catering & camping field all offer recycling facilities and we will re-use everything given the opportunity, including waste water from showers & washing facilities.

Our plan involves reparation work with the local Youth Offending Team and ‘on the job’ training skills given to adults with severe learning difficulties from the Huntspill Project, with a view to them attaining employment within the agricultural or horticultural industry. This is a non-profit making enterprise and therefore will be fairly price locally produced food for local people.

Our project at Bridgwater is producing Local Food for Local People, minimising food miles and using organic practices. We are also opening up the fields and farmland for walkers and visitors to visit and explore. The increase in bio-diversity alone is well worth seeing!

We are patrons of Open Hands India. Although it is not a local charity it was started by our next door neighbour! We hold several fund raising events each year to raise money for her village projects.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Camping on the farm was great. Roaming chickens, friendly rescue dogs and a great view! Was very nice to know that only 5 tents are ever allowed... we were on our own and had a peaceful stay .

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This is a great base for exploring Somerset. The Farm host organic weddings in their marquee at weekends, so I guess if you want a peaceful camping stay, go during the week as I did. The self catering cottages would not be affected much by weddings I think.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. The staff where all friendly and very mindful of the environment etc. they even explained why they couldn’t have a compost loo!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A nice place to have a mid week break

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

My young boys got to collect their own eggs from the chickens and then ate them for breakfast. They absolutely loved the haystack. I walked up to the stone circle alone and saw a badger. My parents loved the morning hot chocolate and thought Lizzie was an angel. My brother loved the goat.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Stay for longer.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It was really nice to feel just for a minute that we were part of an organic farm, as this is my dream. We had a small glimpse into the hard work but satisfying life of organic farming.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Ticked all the boxes. Lizzie and her family made us feel very welcome and not at all in the way. As she said early on, 'anything's possible'. Even though it was only 2 nights, we all felt refreshed afterwards.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We had a wonderful time on the coast nearby at Kilve, but generally just really enjoyed being near the farmhouse, the lovely breakfast and the countryside.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Spend an extra day there!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, being in Somerset reminded me how great it is to spend time in England and it was good meeting local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We only stayed on the farm for along weekend, but it felt like much longer. Whenever we have some free time my daughter (who is six) asks if we can go back to Somerset to stay with Lizzie, so the whole experience was very memorable and hopefully we stay again soon.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Arriving to a very warm welcome...a pot of tea and hot chocolate for the children. Sitting round the large table at dinner time with an extended community of friends. Collecting eggs and meeting Esther the pig. Meeting lots of cool likeminded people was the best.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to be amazed by the hospitality. Try out all the different ways to stay at this accommodation from camping to self catering to b and b.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We eat loads of yummy local produce. We didn’t fly to Spain.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.
