We have practiced being a green and ecologically sound hotel for the last dozen years. It uses predominantly, although not exclusively ecologically sound washing and cleaning materials the soaps and cosmetics in the rooms are organic and not only not tested on animals but also suitable for Vegans.
We have used low energy lighting, recycling and water conservation practices for many years. When the world woke up to the imperative need for conservation about 10 years ago we were the first to be audited by the then government funded conservation group.
The biggest energy cost in a hotel is of course heating. We have initiated our own scheme of using 4 instead of one boiler, in order to profile the heating demand to the lowest consumption of energy. All our radiators are thermostatically controlled and most of our lights low energy.
We use predomatily local suppliers, local food and organic food. Even our Hotel Laundry is local (it may not be obvious but many hotels often have a collection and delivery service that locates the laundry over 100 miles away). We use fair-trade products where possible especially in the guest rooms and for the tea and coffee in the breakfast room.
Responsibility towards one’s staff is easy to claim but not always easy to measure. As we approach the month end it is notable that the payroll today has the complete staff list having been with us averaging over seven years each.
We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
