How this holiday makes a difference

All the staff at our Argentina estancia are from the local area. Maintenance of the Estancia is carried out by people from the local community: bricklayers, plumbers, millers, woodcutters, mechanics, etc. Food is purchased in stores nearby (especially meat, vegetables, cheese, mushrooms, and marmalades). Cheese and marmalades are manufactured by local people. Honey is produced in the estancia.

The ranch forms part of one of UNESCO’s World Biosphere Reserves. Flora and fauna are preserved and no harmful activities are allowed such as tree felling, hunting or lighting fires. Nature is always protected. Cattle are fed by natural grass, and animals live all over the fields. Honey is made by our own bees.

Wood used for fireplaces and barbecues is taken from fallen trees, in order to avoid damaging the forests. Solar energy is used in some houses. The main house does not have electricity. Energy is provided by a generator. Guests are requested to minimise the use of electricity, turning off the lights and closing the doors in winter for more efficient heating.

Guests are requested to use the shower instead of the bathtub. Towels and sheets are changed every 3/5 days, or upon request. There’s a sign on bathrooms warning people of the need to save water, and to minimise the use of detergents when doing laundry.

Each gaucho, once they start their own family, is given a house. Their children (and children from other farms) attend the rural school of the Estancia, and in this way it is possible for them to have a good education. The building was lent by the Muniz Barreto family (of the Estancia) to replace the old one on Route 11 which was constantly vandalized. The Estancia also contributes to some expenses. Every day, the teacher picks up other students from neighboring farms and then takes them back home.

Gauchos are trained in all rural activities, even modern ones such as artificial insemination. Shells are taken from many of the quarries of the Estancia to improve the roads to the town and facilities nearby. We give guests information about local attractions & services. Guests get a deep insight into the “Gaucho” culture: their way of life, behavior, thoughts and daily activities.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our visit to the Estancia had many highlights: riding the "criollo" horses (wonderful, reliable animals!), the peaceful surroundings, the clean nature and the wildlife. The hosts were really very hospitable, kind and attentive to our different needs (a family with 3 children in very different ages, one of them was taught to ride there). The food was excellent; we had mentioned our interest to have local specialities (good Argentinean grilled meat -parrillada-, empanadas, homemade jams, dulce de leche, Arg. wine, etc), but if you prefer int'l food, they will gladly prepare it too. They are very flexible in every way. We lived in the main house, another memorable experience: antic furniture, interesting library. Talking to the hosts and the employed gauchos and staff, you could sense their love to the land and the farm life.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Try to stay as many days as you can or your budget allows you to stretch it, it is really worth it! This may give you the chance to participate or at least see the local work with the cattle and explore more thoroughly the property and the many old buildings. If you have kids, they will certainly appreciate this.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The employed staff at the main house, cooking and cleaning, were all locals, as were the gauchos organizing the riding tours. As to the environment, they used the fruits and vegetables growing in the estancia and for the meat their own free-range cattle. The rest was brought from the nearest village. Of course, we had to drive from the capital Buenos Aires to the Estancia, but once there we only used the horses, the bikes and our legs to move around.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Visiting this Estancia was the best choice we made for our trip to Buenos Aires and we will certainly try to go back for a longer time. We all give it our "thumbs up" and wish they keep on as they are. We are very grateful to all the people at the Estancia.
