How this holiday makes a difference

We were awarded the GOLD Green Tourism Business Scheme Award in October 2011 and Cben Gold for enviromental excellence.  In the dinning room our jams and marmalade are homemade. The bacon, sausage  bread and croissants (except our homemade loaf) are produced in the village with ingredients sourced within Cumbria.  Bees from Ambleside help produce the honey bought from a beekeeper from Kendal and our butter is handmade on a farm near Carlisle all helping reduce our “food miles”. In the community we use local tradesmen for all the maintenance that we don’t do ourselves.

We reuse and recycle our paper, glass, plastic, tetra pacs and tins. We also have compost bins for our compostable waste. Outside we harvest rainwater to water the flower tubs. We have bird boxes and tables and have an insect hotel by the compost bins. We have maps and timetables to encourage you to walk and use public transport. We have replaced 90% of the most used bulbs with low energy bulbs. Our office stationery is recycled or made from sustainable forests, as is our facial, toilet tissue and kitchen hand towels. We clean using environmentally friendly materials where we can and buy as much as we can in bulk and decant into reusable containers. In the laundry we wash on low temperatures using non-bio powder and special laundry balls. All our printer cartridges are recycled. We switch off lights when they are not needed; TV's are turned off as we clean rooms (not left on stand by).

Used postage stamps go to the local brownie pack who collect them for the Local Children's Hospice. We sponsor Lakelanders Hockey team and are joint sponsors of the children’s races at Ambleside Sports. We commit time to Guiding, the football club, and Sports committee.

In 2010  we won the Sustainable tourism catagory in the Cumbria tourism awards and made it to the finals of the Cumbria  Business  excellence awards  in enviromental awareness.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The extremely comfortable bed, great plumbing in bathroom (lots of water pressure and hot water on bath and shower, very appreciated after a hard day walking!) and delicious, generous breakfast, cooked to perfection.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Central location means a bit of noise from road but lots of other upsides make up for it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This is the best run B&B I've ever stayed in. Vicky and Paul are fantastic and pay a lot of attention to detail. They certainly go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and provide everything you may need, including good hairdryers (not cheap version widespread in other hotels/B&Bs) and a tray for muddy boots!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

A visit to holehird gardens. A hidden gem of the Lake District and on a glorious spring day we revelled in the sight of 1000's of daffodils crossing the hillside.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Visit the local Tourist Information. The B&B had a fantastic collection of leaflets and ideas for walks, restaurants etc.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

This B&B uses low energy bulbs. Has a recycling policy for paper with a basket put out for use by clients.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great B&B, is lovely, very friendly/ lovely foods and nice touches such as a lovely complimentary pot of tea or coffee in the lounge when you come in.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We had a great walk, right from the door of the B+B, to the pretty village of Troutbeck, then up (and up some more) over Wansfell with fantastic views in all directions. Friendly owners, excellent breakfast with lovely homemade jam.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

A lot of stairs to the rooms on the top floor, but worth it for the views.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, they have a lot of involvement with local conservation and recycling.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Friendly and welcoming, Ambleside is better out of season as can be very busy in summer.
