Luxury spa hotel in Cornwall
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
The hotel has been designed and built around our cherishing the world ethos and we work hard at reducing the negative impact we have on our environment.
The hotel is sustainable from the ground up and in over 101 different ways:
- Insulation from the hotel which previously stood on the site was donated to the Monkey Sanctuary to keep monkeys cosy and warm.
- Slow worms and adders were removed and re-homed before building work started.
- The hotel has been built to fit within our landscape using FSC timber and reclaimed materials.
- We have solar panels, air-to-air heat exchangers, natural ventilation systems and a biomass boiler.
- We have dared to be different and our cliff top hot tubs are log fired, our outdoor swimming pool is filtered by a natural reed bed, and guests have been enjoying their complimentary room service trays (laden with fresh teas, coffees, milk and homemade goodies) while sleeping peacefully in rooms without the hum of a fridge being lulled instead by the crash of the Atlantic Ocean.
- We actively reduce our carbon footprint with low energy lighting, appliances and an induction kitchen and we reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill with our Ridan composter and reduce, reuse, recycle policy.
- We have an electric car charging point available, free of charge, to our guests.
We provide information on local transport connections and walking, running or cycling routes. Additionally, we provide guests with information on clusters of activities, attractions, walks and things to do in different areas of Cornwall, encouraging guests to reduce their carbon footprint by enjoying one area for whole day rather than travelling from location to location.
We have secure, under cover bike racks for guests and, while not a member of the walkers and cyclists welcome scheme, offer guests the same levels of services expected from the schemes (i.e. drying areas for wet kit, flask top ups, packed breakfasts and lunches, weather reports, maps, etc).
We are very proud of the hotel that we have built and the painstaking efforts that we have made to protect and harmonise with our unique environment.
Community
We believe in creating meaningful relationships with our local community and we are committed to a variety of local charitable causes and initiatives;
- co2balance plant trees on behalf of our guests wishing to offset the emissions associated with their travel, in an area of woodland owned and protected by a charitable trust. The trees will be allowed to grow feeding oxygen back into the atmosphere; it can be visited by guests and the local community and will return to local ownership after 100 years.
- We have set up a charitable community fund to support new and existing environmental and social initiatives and projects within the local area.
- We support the National Trust’s activities along the North Cornwall coastline, Surfers Against Sewage and the Cornwall Air Ambulance.
- We also consider a range of charitable requests on a weekly basis and have provided financial or ‘in-kind’ donations to a variety of causes.
- We organise and run regular beach cleans of Mawgan Porth beach, and actively encourage guests, local businesses and local residents to participate.
- We happily share what we know and do and provide guest lectures, talks and tours to local businesses, schools, colleges and universities.
