How this holiday makes a difference

Although we are quite a small family business sleeping up to 40 people, we do employ local people to help with the cleaning, the garden and the collection of olives in Autumn. We make home grown local produce including wines and raki is used in the taverna.

We do obtain a small amount of energy from wind turbines situated on the hill just above us . We have here, solar panels to heat the water. They are situated in discreet positions within the garden. Throughout the accommodation we use energy efficient light bulbs. We have written requests to turn off all appliances when guests leave the accommodation. We operate cleaning on a daily basis, so electrical appliances are checked daily.

During the winter months we have water butts to conserve water. Certainly not in the summer as the rainfall is almost non existent . We do not recycle water. We have, baths and showers and half flush toilets to economise on water, which is of the upmost importance here in Crete. All bed linen is of natural fibres and - with the exception of towels - is changed once a week. We use only eco cleaning products Window cleaners, washing up liquid etc, and vinegar is used .

The accommodation is in a simple Cretan style All the doors, shutters and furniture are of natural wood. In the rooms we try to avoid any kind of furniture, fabric or paint that emits VOCs.

We use very little pesticides and fertilizers. Leaf mould is used. When cutting the grass on the lawns, we leave the cut grass - it acts as a wonderful natural fertilizer. Any other weeds are removed by hand. An old, but effective method for killing off the daka (a type of mosquito that attacks the olive) is placing and hanging in the trees special bottle containing a small amount of ammonia and filling it up with water. Within the garden we have an attractive mixture of cultivated plants and indigenous plants.

Waste is recycled. Separate bins for paper, bottles, tins and as most of our guests are very 'eco minded ' they assist us , and there is no problem.

Being ourselves great animal lovers with our own dog and cat, we also have in this vicinity quite interesting wild animals and birds and do our outmost to preserve them. We have a particular large badger who occasionally pays us a visit and for some unknown reason always happens to fall in an empty pool during the winter months and has to be rescued, unharmed, in a very unorthodox manner. Placing two planks for him to decide to come up - not forwards - but backwards!

Accommodation Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
