How this holiday makes a difference

We have just purchased and are installing our first composting toilet. All cleaning products used on site are bought in concentrated form and diluted when used into sprays and are all eco friendly cleaning products used in recycled or recyclable plastic containers. This cuts down on packaging and means very little is thrown away. We use biodegradable supplies where possible ie recycled lavatory paper, biodegradable black bin liners and use a supplier who collects and recycles the cardboard packaging.

Due to the Local Authority¹s agents not being able to collect recycled waste from businesses at present we are unable to offer recycling facilities. In our visitor information packs we ask visitors to recycle and advising them where their nearest recycling points are. In the office we are able to do much more and recycle paper; print emails, where absolutely necessary, on the reverse of used paper; recycle printer ink cartridges and toner cartridges; recycle cardboard via local authority collections. The office itself is recycled being an abandoned caravan, restored and fitted out to provide an office. Where practicable we compost on site but as yet have not sourced an efficient and eco friendly method of using mostly grass trimmings. The Warden and Assistant Warden not only recycle personally but also compost.

When our tipi poles are worn we leave them on the ground to rot down and provide food and cover for insects. We have a deliberate policy of encouraging wildlife on site and consider that rather than setting aside an area for wildlife the whole valley is dedicated to the natural world and certain areas are set aside for humans and their vehicles. We have a deliberate policy of encouraging wildlife on site and consider that rather than setting aside an area for wildlife the whole valley is dedicated to the natural world and certain areas are set aside for humans and their vehicles.

We encourage and sustain our native wildlife by delaying cutting and strimming until flowering, seed forming and seeding are optimum, pollarding tress where possible rather than cutting them down to allow light in, leaving fallen trees or pollarding trimmings to rot where possible to provide shelter and food for insects etc. We leave areas of certain plants such as nettles deliberately unstrimmed or cropped as they provide feeding and nesting sites for wildlife. We deliberately strim or cut round other specific species of plant and tree for the same reason. We have installed bat and bird boxes to encourage and sustain certain species.

We employ 6 local people on a permanent part time basis. We host community events for local groups such as the Brownies, local churches (retreats), primary school, etc and have special rates for group bookings by charities. All stamps are saved and passed to the local primary school who use them to raise funds for guide dogs for the disabled. We use supplies and services sourced locally wherever possible. We provide a visitor info pack which contains information on local goods, services, attractions. We sponsor local events such as the parish calendar and we donate short break holidays as prizes for charity raffles, fund raising etc.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Boating on the lake was lovely.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This is much more basic than we'd expected, so be prepared. Take lots of extra bedding and your own supplies of basic things like matches and cups, etc.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I have no idea. Nobody working there seemed to be local, and when we asked directions from local people they didn't seem to notice the place existed.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I really want to say lots of brilliant things about this trip, mainly because I'd waited to go for a couple of years, but frankly I was massively underwhelmed and hugely disappointed. We were the only people on site apart from a young couple who left the day after we arrived, however, I was made to feel at the time of booking as if special provision was being made to 'fit us in.' The check procedure was a joke
and things weren't ready for us. After which time we just didn't see anyone for the next three days that we were there. While I realise that this is intended to be quite a 'self-sufficient' holiday, I have never felt so abandoned before. Even at a basic campsite a warden generally makes himself known and checks in to see if people are ok. At one point it occurred to me that we could all have fallen in the lake and no-one would have known if we were there or not. In the end we just left. And I really felt that much more effort should and could have been made given that we were the only people on site and were a group of women and children on our own.

I have worked in tourism development for years, including quality and standards, and am sad to say that I have never before experienced such serious misrepresentation or lack of customer service. For example, when we arrived the guy who checked us in was - by his own admission - drunk, couldn't tell us where most things were, explained some things twice and told us he hadn't had time to chop wood so we could build a fire and that he would chop some for us the next day. This was a serious problem as by this time it was 7pm and getting dark. So we had to make do with the few bits would could find laying around the place... we didn't see that guy again and in the end had to ask a friend who lives locally to help us out. It was my feeling that they just weren't prepared for the beginning of the season. Which is fair enough, but then please don't take bookings if you are not ready!

One thing that also annoyed me is the fact that we were given no warning about the need to bring serious amounts of bedding. We had the standard - sleeping bags and blankets - but we froze. And... to add insult to injury... the tipi leaked and we got rained on at night. I felt very sorry for the other couple, who had been forced to go out and buy extra bedding because they were freezing at night. This is ok for a general wild camping experience, but it was hugely overpriced for what you actually get. It's a far cry from Swallows and Amazons and frankly I felt pretty cheated. I would love to be able to recommend this break to friends and fully expected to be able to come back a do just that... but, more than anything else, the appalling customer service means that, in all good faith, I simply can't.

Read the operator's response here:

Again I’m unclear what the comments about being ‘fitted in’ and “special provision” at the time of booking mean. My staff tell me that everything was ready for the tipi concerned, and certainly overall for the beginning of the season. The emotive allegation of “abandonment” is most unusual, also the conviction that “a group of women & children on our own” (ie without a man) should be given different treatment. Whilst we make every effort to deal with all our customers’ individual needs and requirements, including perhaps extra help with chopping logs, campfire lighting etc, our (male) Warden has to be very careful about the help he offers women alone as some people are quite offended at being offered such extra help. Lighting fires, carrying water, fishing in the lake are all part of the holiday intended for the customer to experience first- hand, not vicariously by watching our staff do it for them. We always aim to help either when we see that it’s needed, or when asked – but this customer simply didn’t ask. The duty Warden that weekend did in fact attempt to make contact with the party several times, but just happened to miss them whenever he went up to their tipi – he was of course available at his house throughout their stay except for that first evening.

Lastly to the most serious point; that of the person who showed these customers in being “drunk”. This has taken a lot of digging to check out given the time lag involved, but I have finally worked out what happened. For this we certainly do apologise. 4 April 2009 was a Saturday and this customer was due to arrive early evening. A little while before their arrival the Warden due on duty telephoned the owners’ mobile to say he’d had a car breakdown & could not get back to the campsite in time to show them in. There was no option but the owner himself (my husband, and yes, we were all off duty) had to leave the family party we were attending & be dropped off at the campsite to await their arrival. Yes, apparently he was a bit tipsy, & may well have repeated some information & even left a few bits out. He also remembers explaining his joviality to the customers believing that honesty is always the best policy, and that they would be understanding given the circumstances. Clearly he was misguided, my husband is duly horrified that such offence was taken & sends his apologies. We would of course have been delighted to explain/apologise much nearer to the event, but again were never told it had been a problem.

Tipi camping isn’t for everyone, regardless of age or sex, & we’re always sad if people haven’t had a good time with us, but to the rest of you who keep coming back I’d just like to say Happy Camping!
