Yurt holiday in Catalunya, Spain
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Aside the carbonfootprint left travelling here the negative impact of this kind of holiday is outweighed by by the positive benefits of economic and cultural exchange with the local community. We use a little petrol for pumping water and gas for cooking. All waste is recycled, electricity and hot water are solar, the yurt and its amenities are dimantled for winter storage so the land can return to its natural state. As far as possible furniture and structures are made from recycled materials or natural material found on the land.
Community
Amongst our friends and neighbours in the village are some who produce wine and olive oil, honey and candles, others are artists. We naturally encourage people to buy directly from them and have started providing olive oil to an organic cooperative in France. One of our neighbours, a shepherd shares some of our land to plant cereals for his animals, who come and mow the grass.
Arnes like the neighbouring villages is very self-sufficientbut and thogh it only has 500 inhabitants can provide everything needed for daily life shops, cafes, restaurants, cinema, doctor, builders. Our kids went to the little primary school. When we cant what we want here ie building materials we travel 10 kms to the next village where we are members of a cooperative. The nearest supermarket is 40kms away so it is rarely worth the effort. In our case never.
