How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Here at Bouça Da Figueira, in our house all our cooking is done by wood, on a wood fired cooking range, it dried our laundry, cooks our food, heats our water and home. All our wood is manually collected by us from the loggers waste in the forest that surrounds us. They log and leave so much destruction, we feel that at least by collecting the waste they leave behind we are helping clean the forest, and making sure the destruction of the trees is not completely wasted. We also have used collected wood and logs in the renovation of our house, for shelves and shelf supports, steps , ornaments and wall hangings and in everyway possible. All grey water from us and the cottage goes to water some terraces through a straw bed soak away. All our food wine and olive oil is produced organically here by us.

Community

Our support of the local community encompasses as many small businesses as possible. We encourage our guests to visit the local markets, artisans and small shops to buy their produce. We have many brochures and local tourist infomation to help with this and can reccomend local suppliers for all guests needs. In our village of Figueira we have a local man who keeps bees and produces the most delicious honey and associated products. Plus local resturants where wonderful meals are available at excellent prices, places where good local artisan goods are produced, A local elderly lady who makes handmade terracotta cooking pots, a local handicapped basket maker. This area abounds with old fashioned crafts and needs to be supported as the artisans all seem elderly and I would hate to see the crafts die out with the old people. To encourage young people into these crafts they have to be appealing and financially viable to them

Story of the accommodation provider

Here at Bouça Da Figueira, we live simply and from our land, our home is a semi ruin where we grow our own food organically and make our own olive oil and red wine. We try to live as healthily and simply as possible. We found this place and quite honestly fell in love. Its a wonderfully unique place with wonderful friendly people. And we wish to share it with as many other as possible. We feel the peace and tranquility here is unbeatable, we opened Mara´s Cottage to help other people experience the joy of this area at a reasonable cost.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

During our 6 days of staying in the cottage (23-29 Feb 2012), we deeply enjoyed it. It is tranquil, peaceful, full of fresh air and comfort. On the one hand you stayed in the forest with all greens around, on the other hand, it is not far from the many UNESCO tourist spots such as Batalha, Tomar, Coimbra ... My wife and I were so impressed by the bright stars at night in the cottage, they are much brighter than anyway. Thank you for the mandarin orange tree just next to the cottage that we did enjoy the fruits everyday, as well as one of the lemons we used it to cook our pork.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You need a car. The cottage is just 5 minutes drive from the beautiful town Figueiro Dos Vinhos, and then from FdV along the IC8, it is easy to go to many other main routes and travel around. Do ask tips from Mr Richard Rihoy (the owner of the cottage), Rick will tell you all the short-cuts and interesting spots to go. Actually Rick has taught us something new everyday during our stay there.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

As stated in the blog of Pat and Rick, they hope to make the smallest carbon footprint. I hope my stay in the cottage can join with them on this move, no matter how small I and my wife have made.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It's just wonderful. Thanks to you Pat for your arrangement of our visiting your cottage, which is so sweet as your smile. Thanks to Rick for your help and advice which are so warm as your hospitality. Also thanks to BonBon's greeting every day during our stay (BonBon or Bonnie is one of the dogs of Pat and Rick). Hope to see you again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Waking up to the view over the valley from the cottage, swimming in the sea in Porto, visiting the towns of Coimbra and Lisboa, trying out all of the coffee shops, the beautiful countryside, spending days reading in the sun.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Spend more than a day in Porto (la casa musical, town centre, beach), go to the cafe in Figueira, eat locally, do the walks that Pat and Ricky recommend, think about going out of high season (March was beautiful), don't worry about long bus journeys - the routes are very scenic, try out all the pastries in the pastelarias, take lots of books, buy a lot of food at the beginning of the week.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes in terms of the holiday itself, although we flew there.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely brilliant - want to be back!
