Tatras mountain chalet accommodation in Slovakia
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We know personally and from our conversing with our guests how beautifully Slovakia is. But the success of a tourism business like ours depends on tourists being able to enjoy all what nature intended. At Chalet Borovo we are aiming to be as GREEN as we possibly can be. We believe everyone can do their small bit to help sustain the natural environment unspoilt and clean for everyone to enjoy.
Chalet is built entirely from the natural materials. The main structure is the traditional log frame of massive spruce logs. Oak shingle is the covering for the roof. As insulation, we used sheep wool and hemp, which allows construction to breathe. Indoor environment is improved by quality clay plasters, casein paint and natural oils that provide the ideal humidity and ecological compatibility. Oak and pine floors are also impregnated with natural oil, same applies for all furniture. Heating is provided by a traditional tile stove which is the heart of the chalet and a source of healthy radiant heat. Water is from a local spring, without the presence of chlorine. Chalet is located near the forest at the end of the village in quiet and peaceful place.
Below are some of the environmentally friendly actions we are taking.
- Separate waste from litter bins in chalet and dispose off appropriately (glass, paper, cardboard, plastics and food waste.
- Locally source breakfast ingredients for guests (milk, cheese, meat, sausages, fruit, oats, free range farm eggs).
- Use only household cleaning products which do not harm the environment.
- When weather permits dry towels on the line.
- Ensuring that efficient use of energy is undertaken and monitor consumption.
- Reduce any polluting activities.
- Promoting a no smoking environment for the benefit of everyone who visits our chalet.
- Providing a natural habitat which encourages wildlife, plenty of bird feeders.
Technological steps:
Solar Panels we'll be first to install solar panels in village next year. During the spring, summer & autumn this will provide 90% of our hot water needs.
During the winter on a sunny day we can take 40% of our needs from the sun for free.
Thermostats how often have you stayed in a ski chalet with radiators on full & windows open? We have fitted thermostats in every room simply adjust to a comfortable temperature.
Towels probably at home you dont use a fresh towel every day. So we ask our guests to hang them and reuse them when possible.
Rubbish we have simple bins where we can recycle glass, metal, cardboard & plastic please separate your rubbish accordingly.
Community
People in mountains always had a tough life so we are doing our best to support local community:
- We use local restaurants and venues.
- We ask our clients to respect the habits, traditions and customs of the destination and immense into it as part of the travel experience.
- We support and prefer to work directly with local businesses, services and individuals to provide fitness and relaxation activities.
- We purchase supplies(food, drinks, buiding material) locally whenever possible.
- We support local projects and non-profitable organizations.
- We aim to work with suppliers that share our commitment to environmental responsibility.
- We are using local unemployed people whenever possible to help us with building and maintanance work around the chalet. Village is place in very remote location and to find work is very difficult around here.
- We use of natural, localy sourced materials in constraction; no use of endangered woods.
- We are creating positive impacts and inputs in the local economy, infrastrucutre, and society
- We are contributing to the development and maintenance of the local community infrastructure, including roads.
There are other steps we can take to help sustain the environment e.g. we can encourage our guests to take the short walk directly from chalet rather than rely on their cars and provide bus times for excursions to attractions and places of interest .
We also try to show our guests how people lived, tell them story of this part of Europe.
