How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

The villa was built 4 years ago by our Spanish builder/neighbour to very high exacting standards. The villa has been built in compliance with environmental and local aesthetic considerations, blending well with the “cortijo” styled houses in the hamlet/valley. In all aspects of the building project local building trades were used. In the finishings of the house a local Carpenter was used to produce traditional styled fitments such as windows, beams, wardrobes etc. Appliances were bought in the village and are maintained by the small electro domesticos.

We have regenerated the previously abandoned, garden around the villa and planted numerous fauna indigenous to the area, this has encouraged the re-population of birds, butterflies and other animals back to the land. The grey water from the house runs off to some lower terraces providing much needed irrigation, hence the use of cleaning chemicals is discouraged.

The house is cavity wall insulated allowing for cool rooms in the summer and warmth in the winter months, guests are encouraged to understand the need for modest consumption of electricity and water, being an area of low waterfall.

Water is provided to the house via mains which is drawn from an underground spring high in the mountains, this water is safe for drinking, avoiding the need for bottled water. We would appreciate our guests to recycle their waste plastic, bottles and paper and use the recycling facilities in the village to deposit this type of waste.

We invite the local pastor to use the lower terraces for the grazing of the local goat herd. Yearly prunings from the olive and almond treest are used for the wood burning stove during the cooler months.

Community

The encouragement in the area of responsible rural tourism provides economic benefits to an area were some of the traditional ways have decreased over the years with the depopulation in the area. The local mayor is actively encouraging the development of rural tourism and guests are encouraged to go into the local village and integrate and enjoy the hospitality which is offered by such a special place. Patronise the village stores and small supermarkets to negate the need to use your vehicle to travel for the larger national store. The village has 3 bakeries which bake in the time honoured way of wood stove baking. The village is home to 3 butchers who all have their speciality local products to offer together with free range eggs. We have 2 banks with ATM's, a small tourst office selling locally produced goods, basket ware ecological beauty products and artwork, canvases and Photography by local artists.

The gastronimic opportunities are fantastic and in recent years the town hall has incorporated a food fiesta into the annual calendar, this fiesta is held on the Village Plaza the first October of the month. Guests are encouraged to buy local foods, crafts and wines, there are shops a plenty and one can generally find all that you require within the village. The weekly market is on a Wednesday and you can enjoy locally grown produce organically grown thus staining the income of the local growers and producers.

Lubrin and it's environs is famous for it's etremely high quality Olive Oil production and visitors are strongly advised to leave space in their travel bags for at least a bottle or two! Harvesting of the olives begins in November through to the end of January and you will be able to see first hand the process taking place if you visit the Almanzara in the village.

Story of the accommodation provider

We found this magical land in 2002. We had a picnic on the land and made a wish that it would be a miracle if we could put our dream home on it. The week before we travelled back to the UK unsuccessful in our quest we were introduced to a Spanish gent who in fact owned that land. Our house built we then designed a home for my parents. We later became parents ouselves in 2005 and our girls are brought up in the Spanish way. Sadly early in 2011 my husband passed away and my mother moved into my home, leaving this lovely villa available for others to enjoy as we have.
