How Dominca rainforest eco lodge makes a difference

Environment

As we are in the middle of beautiful nature we do our best to conserve it. We put a lot of effort to reduce our footprint on Planet Earth. As we have no electricity, Roots is run like a boat, which means we have battery power, but also like to use our self-built clay-oven and candlelight. We recycle everything possible and try to stay far from plastic and other waste. Our cabins are built with eco-friendly materials, mostly bamboo. All trees that have been harvested have been replanted in cooperation with the National Forest Reserve. We have composting toilets and use water right off the spring. It's superfresh and contains lots of minerals. The main resource for the whole island is close to our retreat, so we go there everyday to tap right out of the river. We grow our own fruit and vegetables without the use of any pesticides. The soil is so rich here, that the food is just full of nutritions. After a few days eating the food and breathing in the fresh air, you feel so healthy and alive. There are absolutely no dangerous animals here, and hardly any mosquitoes. So no repellant or harmful drugs needed.

Community

We absolutely LOVE Dominica and the people that live here. We support our friends from the Kalinago community by offering them good conditions and helping them to promote and maintain their lifestyle. They have helped us build our beautiful authentic huts the same way as they have been living for century's. We have two members of the Kalinago community that come and work for us on maintenance and housekeeping. Of course we offer them good wages and support their families too. Also our good friend and neighbour Martha is very important to us. Our guests love it when she comes over and shows them how she cooks an authentic Caribbean meal. As she is not used to tabletops, she cooks right on the floor on an open fire. Also she helps us with the garden, she's an expert on growing vegetables and fruits. We work closely with local guides, for example to take you to beautiful Boiling Lake or to go whale watching.

The story of the provider of Dominca rainforest eco lodge

Pat and Staci Kosick have been in the Caribbean for 40 years collectively. Yes, they have a few stories and Capt Pat will keep you highly amused and entertained during your stay with many of them. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has been heading south ever since. He has spent the last thirty years in St Thomas where he had a very successful charter business with the sailboat Ike Witt. Staci Kosick came from New Mexico and spent her adult life in Colorado. She is a photographer by trade, has achieved a culinary education in Europe and has lived in St Thomas for the last decade. They have relocated to Dominica and absolutely LOVE the Island and it’s people.
