Chiseldon country house hotel in Wiltshire, England
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Since taking over Chiseldon House we are looking at sustainability where previously this had not been an approach to the business. We are working to introduce recycling of waste and composting of garden waste. Already the majority of lighting is low energy and we are in the process of completing this project. We have made some progress in this area in a short space of time but we recognise this is a start and are looking forward to continuing this progress.
The three acres of gardens are welcoming for wildlife, with green space, trees and hedging, not just pleasing on the eye. The gardens are a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the bird song.
Chiseldon House is located a short journey from Swindon railway station, with its excellent railway links, and there is a bus service coming to the village of Chiseldon as an alternative to getting a taxi; though it is a convenient location for driving, the car free can also enjoy a relaxing time away.
Chiseldon House is a historic building of interest, and is Grade II listed. We are working hard to maintain Chiseldon House in good order and seek to use local tradesmen to maintain its style.
Community
Chiseldon House likes to recommend and use local businesses, whether it be photographers, florists or toastmasters. Our employees make recommendations in the community outside of work because of our knowledge, good working relationships and interactions. We also like to recommend places for guests to enjoy, whether as a day out or an evening walk. Our staff are happy to talk about their places they enjoy, with no script to follow.
We host a popular villagers lunch on a frequent basis and also host charity events. Our first charity event as new owners is a charity afternoon tea on Thursday 20th October 2011, which is supporting a local school project and a national charity AYME.
The majority of employees live in the local area, having less than a ten minute travel time, and several are in walking distance. We are currently working with Swindon College on the apprenticeship scheme, to train and develop young people.
Chiseldon House currently displays paintings from a local artist and photographs from photographers, ones we would recommend because we like their work.
As Chiseldon House is a historic building in the area, we are interested in researching its history and ensuring that the building is in good condition for the enjoyment of many for years to come.
Landscape
Chiseldon House has an excellent location to enjoy the landscape, sitting on the Marlborough Downs in the North Wessex Downs area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We want to share the pleasure that this landscape brings to us and to Chiseldon House with our guests, whether this be showing guests a pleasant evening walk to enjoy at the end of the day, or recommend a horse riding school. At Chiseldon House you can live in our wonderful environment.
Chiseldon is a village which started as a Saxon settlement 'Ceosel Dene', and has an active local history group and a museum in the village. The Chiseldon Cauldrons were discovered in late 2004, with the first of the twelve bronze and iron cauldrons on display in the Iron Age gallery of the British Museum.
