Yucatan beach self catering accommodation, Mexico
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Wildlife in the Yucatan is one of the main reasons people visit us. We have huge colonies of Flamingos that live in the rias all around us. We encourage guests to watch them but to not disturb them in anyway as they can become easily frightened and exhausted. We also have many Turtles hatching along this coastline. we have been lucky enough to have this happen right outside Casa Rosa. Guests are told under no circumstances must they touch or disturb the Turtles in anyway. this is a legal requirement as well as enviromental as Turtles are protected by law. We do all we can to ensure our guests understand and respect the wildlife that lives all around us here in the Yucatan.
We feed and help the local beach dogs and cats. We support and volunteer at the local free spay and neuter clinic held annually in Progreso. Guests can participate if they wish. The clinic are held each year in January, this year over 900 cats and dogs were spayed and neutered. These are pets as well as strays. Offering the free clinic helps poorer families to ensure they can spay and neuter their pets. This clinic has a great impact on the problem of stray animals in the area.
We clean our beach each day and re cycle our plastic and cans. These are given to a local woman who sellls them, this is her main income.
Community
We are very involved with helping to ensure our guests enjoy the attractions offered by local businesses. We seek out local fishermen for trips, we can recommend where to eat, where to shop for food and gifts from local stalls and shops. We do our best to ensure they spend their money where it will be needed the most and where they will get the best experience that will stay with them.
One trip we recommend is to San Crisanto where the local fishermen cleared canal ways through the mangroves and offer boat trips ending at a cenote for swimming. This is a fun, inexpensive trip which aids the community of San Crisanto as income from fishing is not always reliable.
Volunteering and Charity. We support the Chelem Christmas Toy Drive, which raises money throughout the year to ensure the children of the poorest families in Chelem receive a present from Santa for Christmas. Each year around 1000 presents are given out. Our guests can attend fundraising events or simply bring small toys with them to donate to the cause.
Traveling with respect is very important and we ensure our guests are aware of local culture. For example we point out that the minimum daily wage here is very low and to be thoughtful when tipping. To be polite and to try to speak Spanish wherever possible. A little goes along way!
