Luxury resort in Kanha National Park, India
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Wildlife: We are working with local schools to create awareness about wildlife conservation. Tiger and Hard Ground Swamp Deer (Barasingha) are well known species but we try to let them understand that others are equally important.
Tourism: Come Celebrate Nature Celebrate Life - this is what we request our tourists to do. We try to spread the words that enjoying nature and enjoying life is same. Sustainable living is very important and we should give equal importance to all the creations of god. Saving our natural heritage for coming generations is our liability.
Waste: We seprate our waste in 3 categories, Degradable, Non Degradable and Reusable. Degradable like vegitable waste is used for Bio Composting, Non Degradable sent to be disposed off for recycling and Reusable waste is used as and when required.
Water: We have water recycling unit where waste water from kitchen and bath area is filtered and reused for watering plants. We always request our guests to use filtered water for drinking instead of bottled.
Energy / power: We use solar power for our street / pathway lighting. Use of CFL, LED lighting and green products is the norm.
Building: Made of mud and clay structure, with bio degradable and reusable materials ours is only resort in Kanha of its type.
Suppliers: Our suppliers are mostly from local area, this is our way of supporting local population. Vegetables and milk products are procured from local farmers and we are further trying to develop them to get better production by introducing better farming techniques and organic farming.
Employment: We have an employment ratio of 80:20 with the higher being local people. This is our way of supporting them. Fair wages is important and we follow the principals of equality with all.
Community
We support local population by procuring vegetables and milk products, wheat, rice and other materials available with them. We are further trying to develop them to get better production by introducing better farming techniques and organic farming. Most people working with us are from local area with the ration between local and outside employees being 80:20.
We are working with local panchayat and schools and trying to spread awareness among population and tourists follow sustainable practices. 10% of our income is being used for developmental and conservation activities around the national park.
One of the most important initiative of ours have been to ask our guests to take a nature walk and bird watching tour to buffer forest, walk to medicinal plantation conservation area being maintained by forest department and visit tribal village and try their cuisines. This way we reduce the pressure of vehicles going to national park for tiger safari.
We train local people to get better jobs and go ahead for better life style thereby reducing pressure on forest area. We try to help the local articians by keeping the products made by them for sale at our resort and calling local dance troupe to perform for our guests.
We have trained 8 local tribal people to act as guides and they accompany our guests when on nature walk / bird watching in buffer forest. This way we are using their knowledge of jungle and helping them in earning a fair income. Now we are planning to support more by teaching them computers, english and other vocational subjects.
