How this holiday makes a difference

We hire local staff where possible so the area benefits from our presence. We buy or produce organic meat and vegetables locally. After hurricane Ivan we setup Recovery Grenada Council to distribute food, water, medicines, vitamin pills, seeds and Christmas presents in the wide area. Every year we support community project(s). For 2007 this was a contribution of US $8230 to help reconstruct the Berean Christian Academy in Grenada. We support local community organisations with food and drinks for their activities.

In March 2007 we installed a 80 kW windmill with an expected yearly yield of 160,000 – 180,000 kWh. With an estimated yearly use of 120,000 kWh the resort will be better than zero carbon, once the connection to the mains is realized. To minimize the energy consumption the resort uses air conditioners with heat recovery units, which convert the heat loss into hot water, in addition to solar water heaters. In addition, a high efficiency dish washer with hot water connection is installed. Although with a smaller impact, energy saving lamps combined with solar lights are used. Energy efficient (class A) refrigerators and washing machines will be installed soon. We encourage other resorts to use wind energy and assist them in their feasibility study, give practical advice and offer assistance in installing by a factory trained team.

We have built a surface well with underground channels to collect the rainwater from the hills around the resort. As there is no industry nor agriculture the water is extremely pure, so filtering is almost an unnecessary luxury. For the drinking water, we go to a source in the mountains, the same water as used for commercially bottled source water.

We ask our guests to cooperate in combining full cars for tours. When guests go to town, we request them to take the bus rather than a taxi (on a voluntary basis). We ask guests to keep using he towels and bed linen as long as is comfortable for them.

We give guests big bars of soap and large shampoo bottles and plan to convert to soap and shampoo dispensers soon. We purchase as much as possible locally made goods. For every guest we buy carbon credits to compensate the net carbon emission caused by flights, stay and activities. We are the first resort in the world to compensate both flights and stay: a Carbon Free Vacation

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Spending our anniversary on a secluded beach near our resort. The villas were lovely and Grenada was beautiful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The excursion schedule can seem to be a bit unorganised so make sure you ask for the things you really want to do so you don't miss out. Snorkelling was great and going to a local street party was a highlight.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Environmentally friendly practices were used but more local produce is needed at meal times. Was not too keen on the instant mash potato and out of date jam. Will be good once the wind turbine is operational

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Grenada was lovely a real Caribbean experience but the resort could do with some upgrading or finishing off.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Lovely location, peaceful and away from the crowds. But still very comfortable and delicious food and wine.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The hotel is quiet - take books and enjoy. Take advantage of all the trips and walks - the island is beautiful and you will be well looked after.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The hotel is very conscious of environmental issues, the windmill generates power, something to do with the air-conditioning heats the water, the water is recycled to nourish the vegetables which appear on the plate minutes after being picked. Local people are involved in the hotel and the owner runs a series of projects supported by volunteers to rebuild schools and farms damaged by the 2004 & 5 hurricanes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a wonderful time and relaxed, just as I had hoped
