How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We would challenge any lodge/resort to have more environmental, cultural and architectural integrity than Guludo! World-leading architect, Richard Nightingale, worked with us to develop the lodge in such a way that every aspect of the design would;
a) Empower local artisans and stimulate a revival in traditional techniques
b) Every material would have the absolute minimum embodied energy
c) The use of electricity and water would be kept to the very minimum
d) If the resort was abandoned the African bush would once again claim the land without leaving scars
We achieved this with fantastic success.
We have numerous projects that seek to protect wildlife in the Guludo region. These include humpback whale research, coral reef monitoring, support for WWF in the creation and management of marine sanctuaries, creation of alternative livelihoods for people using unsustainable fishing and farming techniques and many more.
Guludo’s environmental policy, and its implementation, has been so successful that in July 2008 UNEP show-cased Guludo as a best-practice tourism-lodge in “Sowing the Seeds of Change: An Environmental and Sustainable Tourism Teaching Pack for the Hospitality Industry.” (http://www.unep.fr/shared/publications/cdrom/DTIx1043xPA/ ) The Guludo case-study included in this DVD is shown as an attachment to this application. It is of special interest because by reading this document and the case-study the reader can see how projects have progressed in the last two years.
Community
Alongside Guludo Beach Lodge we established Nema, an independent charity that implements local projects managed by lodge employees. Through our work we have provided access to clean water for 24,000 people, a school meal every day for 800 malnourished children, secondary school scholarships for 127 scholars, construction of 2 primary schools, distributed 9,500 mosquito nets and household training in nutrition, malaria, HIV, hygiene and sanitation. The lodge has over 150 local suppliers, employs 80 staff and 8 local craft enterprises sell their products to our guests… and this is all just the very tip of the iceberg.
Our work has attracted international attention and we feel very humbled to have received many awards for our work:
