How Ilha Grande ecolodge accommodation, Brazil makes a difference

Our guesthouse has been built keeping in mind a constant concern of preservation. Eight of our rooms have solar water-heating. All rooms have an optimization system to avoid the waste of electrical energy. It is a system with a card which cut the energy for air conditioning and lighting when the guest leaves the room. Our guesthouse has a septic cesspool equipped with filters. All pillars used in the guesthouse are made in sustainable eucalyptus wood. We only use biodegradable certified products for cleaning and maintenance of our rooms. We always inform our guest on the protection of the forest and the sea as we are in a protected area. For lamps which need to stay a long time on, we always used efficient light bulbs. We have a special place for feeding the birds and another one for some squirrels.

All the people working at the pousada are from the village (6 people). We give some language training to one of our employee. We buy our bread and cheese to local producer from the village (5 minutes walking from our guesthouse). We used local service for hydraulic and electric issues, it is always the same person who make it for us. This person is from the village.

All the objects left intentionally by our guests when they leave the room are given to the local church. We recommend 4 local restaurants in the village, also I recommend one travel agency and one diving agency. For each guest, we always show a map with the different activities on the island. All the tips received are systematically distributed among all the employees.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Ilha Grande was excellent, the water clear, the nature wild and the accommodation I stayed lovely.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take it lazy, take it active - no matter how, you will enjoy it. Make sure you visit some remote beaches and eat at Lua y mar. And spend at least 4-6 days.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The accommodation employed local folks and it looked that the waste was brought to minimum. However, Brazil as well as Ilha Grande are quite disrespecteful to waste and garbage in general and piles of garbage meet you also in the this beautiful island. My recommendation - try to take all your bottles etc that you use back with you to mainland and leave as little as possible in the island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a great beach holiday and served my purpose of a lazy and picturesque holiday to its fullest.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience of Brazil, the colours the beaches, the food, the people, thw weather. It was all magnificent and thoroughly enjoyable was superb accommodation and the hosts could not have been more friendly.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It can be very hot in their summer and also very wet at times. Take plenty of insect repellent and after bite stuff. Do not let this put you off however.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. The island population are relatively poor and any help is of benefit.

A minimizing impact is a hard call. The tourist impact on the island is already large now exacerbated by cruise ships from Rio that call in twice per week in the season.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. We also visited two other areas along the coast from Ilha Grande. Parati is an excellent old colonial town which is well worth a visit.

The hike to Lopes Mendes - totally worth it! One of the most beautiful beaches and clear waters, and we spotted a few monkeys on the way!

Plan your journey - it can take several hours to get to Ilha Grande and if there are a few of you, a taxi will be only a little more expensive than the bus - and take a lot less time

Absolutely, this is a great place to stay. The best on the island and absolutely beautiful. They have taken such great care to ensure that the surroundings are unspoilt
