How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Recycling has been our motto for over thirty years. We compost our peelings, tea leaves, paper, leaves ,weeds etc and recycle all paper ,tins and plastics.we pick rubbish lying on the side of the road and bring it home .My neighbour and I go out regularly with bags to clean up the roadside.
We grow our own vegetables organically using our own compost and home made garlic spray. Our guests always comment on the taste of our tomatoes.
We reuse our washing machine water to water the garden and to wash the car.
We walk and cycle as much as possible and when we use the car we try to fit as many other errands in on the same trip.
We have feeders out for yhe bird population and the swallows come in great numbers every year.We leave their nests in situ from year to year.we collect the slugs in the vegetable garden under newspaper and move them away from the vegetables. our area is called BROCKA home of the badger, but we see more foxes than badgers. We have a wildlife area at the bottom of our garden which is left to grow undisturbed. there are many butterfly bushes in the garden as well as other shrubs that attract butte3rflies.
I teach set dancing to children and adults in our area which is great exercise as well as fun.
My husband is a carpenter who built our house from locally grown timber and left untreated except for floors on which we used organic varnish,.
Community
We support all local charity shops.
We hold a charity Jumble Sale every year and save the secondhand items all through the year.We then donate the proceeds to St Vincent De Paul and recycle the items left over.
We buy from the local farmers market every week in our local town which is Nenagh
We support local restaurants ,especially ones that use local grown produce and employ local people. We supply vegetables to them also.organically grown.
I am a member of St Vincent De Paul charity. and work for the local community.
visiting the sick and lonely, collecting from one and giving to another and meetings.
We welcome tourists to our area and have won a "Welcome of the Year" award for same by being warm and friendly, helping with itineraries and generally spending time with our guests.
My favourite way to help support my Community is to be a good neighbour and friend. My husband and I do this by helping any of our neighbours in need such as minding their pets while they are away, helping with bills when they are in need such as one lone parent who is struggling. We are also good listeners.
I trained as a local tour guide and take people on Heritage and BOG WALKS.We visit 2 beautiful castles once owned by the Okennedys and the Mac Egans.
We also visit the ancient monastic sites of Lorrha where St Rhudain founded the first monastery in the 6th centuary.
