How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We live in such an amazing part of the world that at the moment remains relatively unspoilt with natural beauty and we will endeavour to do our bit to keep it that way. We aim to look after and protect our natural landscape by conserving energy and water and to reduce the amount of waste we produce and have a strict recycle policy. We try as much as possible to get our guests to follow suit by reusing towels, minimising the toilet flush and not leaving electrical equipment on standby. We have had a water meter installed to allow us to monitor our water usage. We have 2 x 1000 litre water tanks buried underground which collect rain water which we use for the garden. We aim to investigate a rain harvesting system. The vast majority of our lighting is from low energy light bulbs, and we have reduced our energy consumption with under floor heating, wood burning stove and have had the house highly insulated. The majority of our appliances are AAA rated. The majority of our cleaning products are environmentally friendly and try to buy recycled toilet rolls, tissues, paper etc. We use fair trade tea, coffee and hot chocolate and other fair trade products where possible
Community
We at Dune View will always buy locally sourced produce for our breakfasts where possible, ie fruit, tomatoes, eggs and bread and always use the village butcher for bacon and sausages. We always direct guests to the local food outlets, rather than the big supermarkets. We like to recommend the local restaurants that also use local produce and employ local people. The next village along hold a great deckchair cinema in the Summer months and it is all run by local people with local food and drink and we always recommend our visitors to go there for a great night. We also have a variety of local crafts on display in Dune View, with pictures and photos and paintings by local people and various other art work.
There is such a wealth of things to do here, so we try to encourage people to do the local things ie boat and fishing trips, surf tuition, kayaking, walking tours etc that are all run by local people.
We have a close link with the local school, where I volunteer to help and have been campaigning for the local council to free over the adjacent field to the school, for the children. We have had lots of ideas and have grand plans to plant lots of trees etc and to actually use the land for the school and local community, which at the moment is just a waste land really. Dune View is also a member of the Woodland Trust.
