How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We have an active environmental policy to view on our website and we encourage guests to do their bit by turning off lights and TVs when they are not in the rooms.
Hessian bags are in each bedroom for guests to recyclable rubbish in making it easier for us to separate refuse and thus recycle.
Lightbulbs have been changed to low energy, the roof spaces re-insulated, an energy OWL is on view so energy consumption along with energy production from the SPV panels can be seen.
Shower heads have been replaced with an eco-camel reducing water used and water butts are all around to catch rainwater for the garden and greenhouse. Toilets have a ½ litre bottle submerged to reduce the flush.
Cleaning cloths and washing products are eco-friendly.
Food waste is split between hens, dogs, compost and lastly, bins.
Refillable containers for toiletries
Wood burning fires use non indigenous wood from a local charity.
Guests are welcome to walk in the gardens, visit the horse, hens or rare breed cattle in our own fields.
We are opposite Bradgate Park and Swithland Woods and encourage guests to visit and enjoy the wild deer herds. We welcome photographers in the Autumn for the rut
Community
We buy local, fresh, British food whenever possible and Fair-trade if not from local suppliers who in turn have sustainable policies. We produce our own fruit and vegetables in the kitchen garden which are then served to guests in season. All food is home cooked and served in relaxed and comfortable dining rooms or on the terrace in the summer.
Four part time staff live within 4 miles, three housekeepers and a gardener.
We rent three barns to locals. The carpenter sells his wooden products to guests and another makes cider and squeezes fresh apple juice which is served for breakfast. We use old wine bottles for this. We send guests to local shops to buy presents for friends en-route home.
Solar Panels were supplied and fitted by a local company which has reduced our carbon footprint. We are very interested in sustainable energy and are quite happy to talk at length to guests if asked.
We use local workmen and suppliers whenever possible. We recommend local restaurants and pubs to our guests and have their links on our website and there are maps available to borrow to walk to these. If we are full we share our guests with other B&Bs in the area to help them and they reciprocate with us.
