We have initiated a project on Corn Island to raise the quality of education. The current situation for education is very bad on the island. Facilities and the level of education are poor as well a lack of educational materials.
The first phase of the project consists of two parts. The first part is the renovation of 3 schools which need it the most and the building of pre-school facilities. Pre-school is taught at a woman’s house at the moment.
The second parts of the project consist of the renovation of the remaining schools and the improvement of the competence of the teachers. The “teach the teachers” part will be executed in close co-operation with USAID.
For the renovation of the remaining school we still need more funding. And we hope to find willing people or ideas through our website.
We buy all building materials locally, as well as all ingredients for the restaurant. This simulates local economy. We employ 21 islanders. All hotel guests are informed about local businesses where they can make purchases like coconut, bread or art. We made our own island map to inform our guests about all local businesses which might be of interest to them.
All furnishings are bought in Nicaragua or on Corn Island. Some arts in the hotel have been designed by local artists.
We also have policies and practices in place to reduce the negative impact on the vulnerable island environment. Waste products are separated. Organic waste is used for garden compost and pig food for the neighbours. The island does not provide any possibilities for recycling items at this moment. A project to achieve this is being defined. The use of electricity is reduced by switching off A/C’s when customers are out and using efficient freezers. To minimise water waste, unnecessary running tap water will cost staff members 50 Cordovas of their salary.
Our garden is organic and we grow herbs in it for fresh dishes in the restaurant. We encourage wildlife conservation by informing all customers who go out on snorkelling/diving trips in not touching the coral, animals or throw any waste in the water. We organize a weekly beach cleaning to clean the beach for a stretch of 1 km.
During hotel check in all guests are informed about our environmental practices and usually support us.
We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
