Margaret River accommodation, Western Australia
How Margaret River accommodation, Western Australia makes a difference
Environment
We have designed our Margaret River accommodation to suit the climate and make use of natural energy. The bungalows face north and catch the winter sun, making them warm in winter while verandahs make them cool in summer. Slow combustion wood heaters make the bungalows warm and cosy in the colder months. Margaret River has a mild maritime climate and the temperature rarely reaches uncomfortable levels making air conditioning unnecessary.
Only recycled and plantation pine timber was used in constructing the luxury spa bungalows. Jamie sourced the timber from salvage yards and it includes oregon roof beams from an old warehouse in East Perth as well as Western Australian jarrah and blackbutt. Deep red local gravel was used to form the rammed earth walls. Granite rock in the garden beds came from a local vineyard where it was removed to allow planting of the vines. Rainwater is collected from the roof to supply the bungalows and all waste-water is treated in an on-site sewerage plant and recycled onto the gardens. We encourage recycling at the bungalows and provide recycling bins. Food scraps are saved for our worm farm. We only use Enjo and natural cleaning products.
We have now been certified biodynamic for 8 years. This allows us to market our produce through organic suppliers and means there are no pesticides, herbicides or artificial chemicals used in producing food on the farm. We have fenced off remnant vegetation and replanted areas to encourage native birds and wildlife. Every year we plant more trees on the property. There are abundant birds, bandicoots, possums and many kangaroos that live on or visit the property from the forest.
Community
We only use local trades’ people and always try to buy local products. We only employ local contactors. Our guests are encouraged to support the small family owned shops, wineries and restaurants in our area that provide genuine local products and services. We provide guests with a comprehensive list of our recommendations. We feel so fortunate that we benefit from running a business in such a special and environmentally sensitive area.
We donate financially, provide produce and volunteer time to several environmental groups in Margaret River that work to protect our special area from threats of inappropriate development, clearing and pollution of water catchments. We are members and volunteers of the Margaret River Regional Producers Association, the body that runs the Margaret River Farmers Markets and also members and volunteers of Slowfood, Margaret River. We also provide support for the Margaret River Primary School Kitchen Garden.
