How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
1. Wildlife:
We are part of Garajonay National Park European Charter for Sustainable Tourism. We collaborate in preservation initiatives from the National Park. We have also become an official information point for the National Park, so that we can provide our guests with useful information regarding places to visit and responsible behavior in natural areas. We are a well-know base for trekking groups, and therefore we are specialized in culture and nature tourism. We inform our guests in reception, through our website and in the information dossiers in their apartments of the uniqueness of the National Park so that they value the environment and their impact. We also include responsible tourism sections with do’s and dont’s in our website and dossiers.
2. Waste:
We are certified with the EMAS III and ISO 14001 Environmental Management. We separate our waste, reduce waste production with a responsible consumption and offer our clients special containers so that they can separate and recycle as well. We have reduced our paper consumption by using paper office both sides. We also use recycled paper, we recycle and reuse furniture and materials. Our waste reduction initiative includes a open sharing corner where our guests can leave when departing their unfinished oil bottles, salt, water, food cans, shampoo... so that future guests can use the remaining amounts.
Community
1. Friends & neighbours
We recommend our guests local supermarkets, activities, restaurants and crafts stores. We encourage our guests to have local food products either by buying them at local stores or by eating in traditional restaurants. We have cards and leaflets of local and regional activities, tours, taxi drivers, guides and restaurants. We have information dossiers in every room with recommended local stores, information phone numbers and restaurants / bars. We also collaborate actively in the advertising of local activities, festivals and concerts directly to our guests in reception and through our blog, facebook and twitter. We also make objective reviews on bars, terraces and restaurants in well-known third-party websites such as Minube, Foursquare or Tripadvisor.
2. Local crafts and culture
Since our founding, in our shop Los Telares and later in the shop Molino de Gofio we have encouraged local producers and artisans by selling their crafts. The stores are now a mandatory visiting point for tourists in La Gomera. It has been the first store specialised in local crafts and responsible of the maintaining of ancient pottery techniques that were disappearing. It also was the origin of new crafts such as the banana tree basketworks and decorative sculptures. We also have the largest private collection of ancient local pottery, looms, mill stones and other objects exhibited in our museum inside a water mill.
