Robertson guest house in the Western Cape, South Africa
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
There is nothing better, than something good.
Birdlife:
We're a birder friendly guest house and provide all materials to specify the birds in our garden. We also place water for the birds in the garden.
Wildlife:
We support nature projects in the area and go hiking with our guests to introduce them the natural beauty of the valley.
Waste:
We do recycle our waste in glas, plactics, tins and bottles.
We try to avoid packaging where ever we can and we use bags and baskets for shopping. We use re-chargeable batteries.
Energy & water:
The electrical appliances are choosen in terms of low energy consumption.
We recycle water from the shower and we use a washing ball to recycle the water and use it for irrigation in the garden.
All showers have water reducers and for the cottages we use a gas geyser.
We use solar energy to heat up our water in the main house and all water pipes are isolated.
We switch of lights and we us motivation sensors in guest toiletts.
Building:
We live in a wonderful old house with high ceilings, shutters to close and windows to open. This guarantees a natural air- conditioning without the use of energy, just the effort to close the shutters.
Transport:
We buy locally and we support the region and the farmers.
We're really ambassodors for this beautiful valley.
We try to avoid to take the car, when we go shopping.
Community
1. Friends & neighbours
We know where to find things local and we support our neighbours, spreading tourism income to those most in need by supporting projects where those, who can work must contribute to gain from support.
Do something and you'll get something!
2. Campaigning for change
We work in a project called Friends of the valley, where we visit local projects and bussiness, which we can introduce to our guests.
We also support local guides.
3. Volunteering & charity
We support local projects & people through volunteering, fundraising or charity. We support the art projects from Ashton Zolani by selling their art and supporting them by buying their furniture and arranging town ship tours for them.
4. A fair deal
We offer local people good working conditions, a fair wage, and empower them with training opportunities.
We train and educate our team and let them gain from our success by paying them additional R
10 for any occuppied room. When our parking is full of guest cars our team comes to work with a big smile.
The aim is, that they can run the guest house by themselves.
We support their children by assisting them with their school fees.
5. Local crafts and culture
We visit local craft projects and introduce this project to our guests.
for example Mama Africa with their candelliers and clothes.
6. Travelling with respect
We work to create good relationships between tourists and the local community and work out routes for them, where they can see the beauty of the nature and meet the people.
Robertson is the SMALL TOWN with the BIG HEART!
We only sell Wine from the Robertson Wine Valley.
We cannot change the world, be we can change our surroundings.
