Plettenberg Bay B&B, South Africa
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We strive to re-cycle as much as possible, thats the reason to farm with compost worms and planting our own vegetables and fruit. At the moment we do have 30 fruit trees and a big vegetable patch. On a very small plot in town. The staff looks after and water the plants,in exchange they also use the fruit and vegetables as needed. All pest and diseases on the plants are treated with the compost tea. Recently we introduced frogs in controlling insects,as is making it a bird welcome paradise.Bird bath and the planting of 140 indigenous trees.
Planning to expand the worms business and make more people in our area aware of the benefits.Recently my staff started to make there own vegetable gardens and using worms to treat and feed there own gardens. With great success!!
Looking into the prospects of generate money from re-cycled products, but need to puschase a press which are a bit too expensive at the moment. With a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, one day we will be sucsessful, to the benefit of all our staff and people in th area!
With the energy crises in South Africa,we started to control the geysers in a switching them of as soon as there is no guest in the rooms.Water is also separated, grey water from sewerage.Grey water is used on plants which also helped with diseases
Community
We at La Boheme B&B,only use local labour and material which is locally produced.
We do have an information centre at the guest house, in order to point out all the local eating out places, activities and excursions.
As a second and third business,we are running activity from the Art and Culture premises, which do support local art and craft and supply the neccesary income for these people. Basically we have a horse outride business and do mountain bike hire.Which provide a few local people with an income, looking at the horses and helping with the outrides.Furthermore they clean and maintain the equipment.Proof of the work supplied by us, is in the fact that one of the grooms has stopped using drugs and slowly become part of normal life again.
All our guest received a warm South African welcome and breakfast is always a hi-light when they all share all their personel experiences and stories.Thats why we prefer not to have separate tables, but at La Boheme B&B, we are all one big family.
To sum it up,we at La Boheme B&B truely understand the importance of tourism and the benefits it provide to all, as it is our daily living. We are in a water scarce area and with water restrictions hapening all the time,we had to change our tactics and daily routine,of which we are very proud
