How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Our promise is to integrate every sensible idea or suggestion we have not yet tried in order to reduce any negative impact on nature.
Some examples of what we already do :
Bake our own bread instead of driving to the baker.
Make our own yoghurts instead of buying plastic pots to throw away.
Recycle all our (and your) packaging, even though our commune still does not provide that service to us.
Compost or feed our leftovers to our animals, our household waste in peak season with an average of 12 guests a night is now down to about half a large plastic bag per week.
Limit/organize shopping by car to days we have to go past shops anyway.
Prepare (organic) eggs only when ordered in order not to boil water without need, re-use such hot water as natural weed-killer cum watering for the garden.
We harvest our lavander manually and only after having left bees the time to extract all they want. We use no chemicals of any kind on our grounds.
Grass and trees are cut electrically (partially of renewable) origin
Most of the house decoration is made of natural materials
Nothing with a possible second use leaves the house and nothing that can't be decently repaired is replaced.
Cleaning and washing is done with a minimum amount of very carefully chosen and dosed product, bed linen and towels are replaced upon request or on stays over 4 nights and all are dried naturally, most stains are removed without chemicals, bin bags are replaced only when required.
Community
We participate in the local program to replant local plants and trees to provide a habitat for local fauna. The region having long been over exploited for agriculture, was in danger of losing its diversity, including the many birds that people travel to see. Intensive projects to return bushes, shrubs and trees to the area have more or less stabilized things and most species now live in natural harmony.
Encourage our guests to visit those places and services that respect the local environment and take action to protect it. Propose restaurants that buy or grow local quality produce.
We buy as much as possible local, when possible organic, produce and encourage guests to consider these as possible souvenirs or gifts. We boycott producers that continue with irresponsible farming methods or 4x4 tour guides that do not respect indicated paths.
In order to promote sustainable and quality tourism we have chosen not to provide evening meals, our guests are those willing to eat in local restaurants, serving quality local produce thus distributing their expenditure amongst the local community. For similar reasons, we will not build a pool. This way we attract the kind of guests who prefer to go out and spend time exploring the local community.
