Loch Ness B&B in Lewiston, Scotland
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We have implemented numerous green measures to help protect the environment, these include using AA & A Energy Rated appliances, energy saving light bulbs, recycling glass, aluminium and paper products and using recyclable products. We compost bed & breakfast and home items, such as paper, egg shells, egg boxes, and we recycle glass and aluminium and excess old paper is used for fuel for log fires. We have a double flush system on all toilets and notices for guests regarding towel washing in all rooms to conserve water. We have energy saving light bulbs throughout the bed & breakfast and electricity is monitored throughout year. We have bird feeders and bird books in the B&B and gardens. Dead wood in the woodlands is left to encourage insects. We use non-toxic cleaning products and recycled black bags and toilet roll.
We have loft and wall insulation to retain heat and reduce costings. The loft panelling boards and thermostatic boiler for the water heater are regularly checked for correct temperature. We have draught excluders and double glazed windows. We have our Green Mission Statement in all guest information booklets, in reception booklets and on our website and we have notices identifying green issues throughout the bed & breakfast. In our office we monitor electricity and consumable statistics. We use recycled paper for stationery, recycle ink cartridges and use recycled ink cartridges. We try to use e-mail instead of postage and printing.
All breakfast produce is bought from local shops and Free Range eggs are from the village, from a friend’s Free Range chickens. Our children go to the village nursery and a village childminder, therefore retaining employment and money in the village. Village amenities and local ‘things to do’ are listed in folders present in all bedrooms. The village amenities folders include all local food menus from catering establishments, leaflets displaying local events and activities. Visitor guides and information packs are displayed in all guest rooms, including lounge/dining room where additional information including walking maps, cycling routes, nature books and area maps are visible.
