How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We have replaced our original housecleaning supplies with "Green Certified" products. We have replaced our original laundry detergents and bleach by using environmentally friendly detergents and destaining products only. We launder linens and towels only when we have sufficient quantities. We have replaced the original dishwashing detergents and procedures by using only biodegradeable dishwashing detergents and using the warewasher only when we have a full load of dishes. We collect and recycle glass bottles. We collect and remove used batteries and take them to a proper battery disposal site. We have eliminated paper napkins, paper cups and plastic straws and use re-washable plastic cups and re-washable cloth napkins. We use corn-based plastic straws and corn-based plastic cups. We do not use fertilizer in our garden and we use native plants in our garden scene. We monitor electrical and water usage on a daily basis to make sure we are optimizing our usage and do not have any leaks or out-of-line usage. We have modified lighting sources in common areas and in guest rooms and have installed low-water warewashers and toilet fixtures. We separate laundry into appropriate and optimal load sizes to optimize laundry machine capacity. We monitor laundry usage. We have installed "hot water on demand" and replaced our laundry and hot water heaters. We recycle paper in the administrative office. We eliminated printing any e-mails by forwarding to the appropriate person.
Community
We have started hunting the preditory and invasive lionfish to help eliminate them from our reefs to protect our indeginous fish population. Our restaurant serves lionfish to our guests as a choice for their dinner or as part of an organized tasting.
Our restaurant is a member of the Sea Sense program and we offer only sustainable seafood choices on our menu. We educate our customers by offering them those selections and showing them the Sea Sense Program brochure. We have our sustainable choices clearly marked on our menus and have a notation that they should ask their server for more details.
We recycle the kitchen's used vegetable oil. We recycle glass bottles from the bar and collect aluminum cans from the guests. We actively encourage the local school children at the closest school to collect and bring their cans to us for recycling. We award their performance with recognition in the newspaper by preparing articles for submission and sending photographs as well.
We support our local artisans by asking them to come to our Resort and offer their collection to our guests for purchase directly, thereby by-passing any "middlemen".
We offer locally grown and provided food as an option to our guests.
