How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Environment
We take the impact on the surrounding environment seriously and are focused on developing better ways to run our Bed & Breakfast with a dedication to reducing its impact on the environment and the communities in which we operate. Environmental sustainability is at the forefront of our agenda and shapes the way we manage our resources.

Our Bed & Breakfast is taking significant steps towards reducing its impact on the environment. Our commitment to creating a positive change towards corporate responsibility and environmental impact is a significant factor in the property’s aim to become a leader in Strahan for environmental initiatives. Our, small in-house Environmental Team addresses long and short term environmental and responsibility issues aiming towards the best possible outcome in carbon footprint reduction and social responsibility for Our property.

In an effort to reduce waste from Our bed & Breakfast, many initiatives are in place. Such as, implementation of recycling stations throughout the property to reduce paper, glass and plastic waste. Soon to be introduced eco-friendly amenities for the guest rooms made from biodegradable Plastarch.
Water conservation is a key priority for us here at the Manor. A water wise & eco friendly landscaped garden with an emphasis on native Australian plants. Guests are encouraged to ‘think green’ with in-room signage promoting reuse of towels and linen. Installation of dual flush toilets, we replace current showerheads with low flow showerheads. Energy usage within the hotel has been dramatically reduced with the installation of efficient lighting in all rooms, restaurants, meeting facilities and public areas.

Community

Franklin Manor is a firm believer in supporting the local community and as such sponsors a variety of community events and regularly supports charity events with in-kind contributions. We also offer dining discounts to Our Locals on our Food & Gift Vouchers.

We use local producers whenever possible to source food for Our Restaurant including free range products where available; for example all eggs and poultry products must be free-range and if possible organic. We only use local trades’ people and employ local contactors. Our guests are encouraged to support the small family owned businesses in our area that provide genuine local products and services. We provide guests with a comprehensive list of our recommendations.

We source local people to work at Franklin Manor and advertise in our Local Newspaper, Radio Station and we are pleased to inform that with our encouragement many of our staff members are active in the community. We happily give time off to those employees if they are needed to man this valuable local resource.

We also engage in a Restaurant and Local Activity referral system directing guests to a number of local Restaurants, Cruises and Activities. Local craft/ souvenir outlets benefit from visitors to the Franklin Manor. The Strahan community also benefits from increased visitor numbers (Service Stations, Grocery Stores, Tradesmen and other Service providers).

Story of the accommodation provider

Around 1888, Captain Edward T. Miles, Master Warden of the Strahan Marine Board and prominent member of State parliament, completed a labour of love. He made finishing touches to “Moana” (now Franklin Manor), his beautiful colonial home in the centre of Strahan on the edge of Macquarie Harbour. Franklin Manor is now an elegant, 14 room boutique guests house, which has a number of interesting architectural features. The underground Wine Cellar is a favourite with most visitors as they descend the stairs to select their own wines. The latest addition is the Wine room Private Dining room featuring Tasmania’s finest wines. The original lounge and dining room remain and have been transformed into a contemporary interior, and guests can relax and enjoy this real piece of history from a modern day perspective

Accommodation Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
