How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

At Cotton Tree we are committed to conserving energy and doing our part to help keep our planet green. This is reflected in the construction and design of the cottages and the natural landscaping which ensures that the resort benefits from the natural breezes from the sea and the shade provided by vegetation. When the property was constructed it was important that as many of the indiginous plants on site remain and the further planting has been entirely in keeping with the seaside location.

We encourage our guests to return their used cans or plastic items so that we can have them recycled and we also encourage guests to reuse towels and linens. We avoid the use of small disposable containers by providing toiletries in large refillable dispensers and food products in refillable containers. Cotton tree uses rainwater collected from the roofs of the cottages and water pumped from the ground to water the gardens.

The property is planted with local fruits and vegetables which are provided to guests when in season and periodically Cotton Tree cooks locally caught fish for guests. Cotton Tree has a natural beach which is a protected nesting site for turtles. Cotton Tree maintains this natural environment through beach planting and also ensures that the beach remains clean from detritus washed up by the sea.

Community

One of Cotton Tree's objectives was to provide guests with a real sense of place and Caymanian heritage. This is achieved and demonstrated through the construction and design of the cottages, the natural vegetation on site including an array of local fruit trees, and the layout of the cottages which provides areas of natural shade and interest. The interior decoration of the cottages includes many works by local artists and archive pictures of oldtime Cayman.

Also, as part of our concierge/guest services, we like to provide our guests with information on lesser known places to visit where they can purchase local grown produce, seafood and local handmade crafts and restaurants where they can sample excellent local food. We also support local businesses by for example having local artists available for painting classes and using local ship charters.

Additionally, Cotton Tree has an outside kitchen nestled amongst the Seagrape trees called a Caboose which was used in the olden days to cook and bake. Cotton Tree offers a genuine Caymanian cook-out to our guests when fresh locally caught fried fish is prepared on the open wood fire together with fried fritters, root vegetables, and homemade limeade.

Cotton Tree has supported many local causes including the work of the National Trust and extends its support whenever possible to the Island’s Department of Tourism.
