How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Island View was totally rebuilt in 2011. The harbour area itself is owned by the National Trust and is declared an Area of Natural Beauty and is therefore protected by local laws and by-laws. During the planning and re-construction phases of our building project, we had close liaision and received enivironmental advice from the National Trust and Natural England. Bat and Barn Owl surveys needed to be carried out as well as a flood risk assessment survey.
The construction company we used are locally based and had recently completed a project in another National Trust owned Cove, only accessible on foot, so were sympathetic to our needs.
We were able to source many building products locally and were delighted to be able to re-use the original stonework which previously had been hidden under rather unsightly pebbledash. The stonemason who transformed Island View to its former glory is locally based and has achieved an amazing restoration.
A sewage treatment plant has been installed some 4m underground which involved deep drilling. This is helping the harbour and surrounding coastline as there is now no sewage waste entering the environment from Island View. As a result of our private drainage system, we take great care what is put down drains minimising the use of harmful cleaning products.
We encourage our holiday-guests to use their cars as little as possible during their holiday by offering walking itineraries and time-tables as well as our local knowledge.
We ask our guests to join us in recycling many waste-products including paper, cardboard, glass, cans, drink containers, batteries, light bulbs, etc.
Our office is now virtually paper-free. If we are forced to use paper, we aim to re-use as much as possible, and when we can't we use recycled paper.
Community
We recommend the café situated next door to our guests at Island View by offering a discount voucher funded by ourselves from their menu. They offer delicious locally caught crab sandwiches, plus locally produced Cornish pasties, home-made cakes and of course a sumptuous Cornish cream tea.
Our cleaner and housekeeper are a local couple who are glad of the year-round work. They are locals and can provide very useful information from knowledge of local restaurants to best beaches close by and other local well-kept secrets.
Our window-cleaner is a one man operation from Mullion village, and the supplier of our logs for firewood for the wood-burning stoves is a local farmer grateful that his excess wood from trees can be recycled.
We provide a folder for all of our guests providing details of local excursions, trips and services offered by local people such as trips to see the seals in local fishing boats, canoeing adventures, snorkelling and scuba diving, horse-riding schools, etc.
The folder also lists recommended local restaurants, cafés and pubs which provide high quality meals, many of which are sourced from local produce.
Mullion Cove is fortunate to be located in a beautiful area with stunning landscapes and dramatic cliffs and panoramic views. W are delighted to have worked towards achieving our goal of restoring our part of this delightful working fishing harbour to its former beauty. The area is exposed to fairly low-key tourism, and we hope to maintain this ensuring it remains for future generations. Apart from residents parking, the harbour area is car-free thereby enabling the air to remain fresh and clean
All our self catering accommodation was built as holiday lets - they are not second homes, and there is no planning permission for year-round occupation. So your stay boosts the South-West Cornish economy without taking accommodation away from local people.
Mullion is a thriving village, due to its commitment of the local villagers who are proud to be part of such a community, and we as owners and born in Mullion and whose family have been a part of it for almost 100 years are very proud. We commit towards working to keeping Mullion very much alive.
