Tofo beach cottages in Mozambique
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We promise to educate the community to become self sustanable through cultivating their lands educating their people sending their children to school for education to ensure that their dependability on Nature and specially the sea becomes less over time.
We encourage our client not to buy sea shells and other marine life items as it encourages further depletion of Natuaral resources.
We reduce our energy consumption by installing low energy globes in all the houses. We also trained our staff to swith off any appliances when not in use when tourists leave the premises to go out. Geysers are swithed off when no booking are made in low season. Gas stoves are used in the houses as they are more efficient. We are currently investigating the production off Biogas for the supply of gass for own use. We have a solar geyser replacement strategy for geysers that might need replacement in the future.
Municipal waste became a problem with housing expansion. The Municipality did not have the funds to implement their own system so an not profittable organization "ALMA" was established by all home owners in Tofo to collect and recycle the waste. Monthly contributions are payed over to ALMA to ensure continued operations.
Whale and shark fin hunting is discouraged by reporting any demeanors to the local goverment.
Community
Tofo Beach Cottages endeavor to buy all building and maintenance material in Mozambique. We also recommend to our clients to buy their holliday requirements such as food and souveniers from the local community and markets.
Tofo Beach Cottages currently have 2 houses made from local material sources from the the locals and not through departemental stores. We also have grass roofs that needs maintenance and replacement very often. This is also sourced locally by the community as palm leaves are woven before applied. Evedence of improvement in the community is clearly visible by the improvement in their clothing and approach to business. The community is now also not solely dependant on harvesting the sea as they are now cultivating their crops.
Our recruitement strategy is to only appoint workers born in Tofo. This strategy have benifited us as we have a crime free environment with the community supporting our business ventures. At least 2 workers have been in our servive for 17 years since our first visit to Tofo.
Fundraising activities are supported by funding. We also use local community in maintenance and support of our environment. The child of one of the workers was send to South Africa trained as a electrician and is now on contract with us for all electrical repairs. Local builders and carpenters are contracted directly in all building projects. This ensures that salaries and wages end up with the families in Tofo. Pedru our local carpenter has been making door windows and furniture for us since 1994. Alberto the local brick layer and preacher has been instumantel in erecting most of our houses.
We cultivate a friendly culture with our guest as we believe a smile will surely result in a smile in return.
Inhambane stands for "the land of friendly people" we do not want it to chance.
