How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We know our wildlife, are committed to conserving it and encourage guests to follow our lead. We recycle our waste to make compost and help feed the chickens. We keep chickens and ducks for free range eggs and meat. We free the land, sea and waterways from rubbish and pollution. We don’t use any chemicals in garden and we use environment friendly cleaning products. We show we understand why water is too precious to waste and, when it rains, we savour every drop.We reduce our energy and find local renewable energy sources for our energy. We show we understand why water is too precious to waste and, when it rains, we savour every drop.

We build, restore and equip using carefully sourced local materials and in a style that tells the cultural or geological story of the landscape. We have an organic vegetable garden where we grow our own tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines, courgettes and herbs. We choose suppliers that match our environmental values. We use local markets for shopping (when we buy nearly all of vegetables and fruits from local markets). We have solar heating systems to provide hot water and energy-saving light bulbs throughout the properties. We insist on energy saving by encouraging the member of staff and our guests to turn their lights off when not used.We have our own well which we have tested our water and found that it is clean, pure and free from anything and we try to encourage our clients to minimize the use of bottle water and use the one we have coming out from our own ground. We recycle our waste into glass, burnable and organic to make compost for the garden and encourage our guests to do so.

Community

We support local organic farming by buying the whole fresh fruits and vegetables from the village. We know where to find all things local and we support/ recommend our neighbours, spreading tourism income to those most in need. Most food is therefore locally sourced, not forgetting absolutely delicious. There is also a weekly market where farmers bring in their produce from the surrounding area. Guests are encouraged to shop at the local markets for food, fruit and veg.We try and promote the local culture and discourage inappropriate development and are in contact with tour operators that respect the environment.

We recognise local issues and actively campaign to address them. We sustain jobs and cultural diversity by supporting local craft makers and artisans, and promoting cultural attractions. We use products locally grown, mostly from our village. In the hotel kitchen, organically produced food is used.
We offer local people good working conditions, a fair wage, and empower them with training opportunities.
We work to create good relationships between tourists and the local community.

Story of the accommodation provider

The land where Yonca Lodge is belongs to our family. To prevent the sale we left our jobs and found a camp in 1989 and with this we met with tourism business. With the time we have learned what we can do more and our experience gained day by day. In the early 2000s the camp has closed and turned into a small hotel named Yonca Lodge. We were glad to receive positive responses regarding the chages we made and keeping the environment natural. Without stopping to make renovations over the years we try to make Yonca Lodge also a more enjoyable place. But we are still amateurs in this tourism business. Each day we try to notice new deficiencies and to complete them. One thing never changes: our respect for nature.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
