How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Besides looking forward to be 100% self-sustainable, at present we use solar water heaters, wind energy, deep-cycled batteries, use roofs as rain-collectors, compost & recycling waste, now our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint until we get to be Zero Carbon.

Our eco-friendly activities include kayak, trekking, and mammal & bird watching. Our last eco-innovation is the electric kayak navigation, specially designed for Mammal & Bird watching, because it does not contaminate the water, is absolutely silent, and deep cycle batteries are recharged by wind energy giving a direct Zero Carbon Footprint.

Having an eco-friendly behavior and kayaking in absolute silence for the past 7 years is rewarding us with the company of river otters and beaver next to our kayaks as they do not fear our presence and they swim and escort our guests in the river.

In our day to day we use biodegradable soaps & detergents. We dry all our linens in the sun instead of using a dryer and do not iron anything, just straight linen and clothes with our hands (and apologize to our guests for those little “nature stains” left by local insects and some natural wrinkles). We do not change towels & linens every day, but we offer to do so at guest request.

Community

At present we buy as many local products as possible, to support our local community : organic vegetables & herbs, native potatoes, garlic, green onions, cheese, honey & marmalades.

We have local Chiloé traditional food available upon request and prepared by families in our local community (to be requested at least a week in advance). Local boats required for our trekking activities are hired from local fishermen and we also offer their services when ever possible.

We are also helping our neighbors, to show them tourism can provide a better way to support their families. At the same time they learn that a standing forest visited by tourists can be much more profitable and would involve a lot less effort than cutting a tree, to chop it in small pieces to be sold as fire wood for wood stoves and heaters.

In Chepu, we feel very proud to have the first Primary School with Ecological Certification, which means kids learn how to compost, recycle bottles into plant pots, prepare the soil to receive new crop, to work in a green house and how to keep our community and their houses clean not throwing waste on the field, roads, beach, river etc. We have an agreement to provide kids every year with non toxic paint for them to write & draw signs that are placed on the road showing people that this community cares about their nature & environment.

Story of the accommodation provider

Back in 1994, we were getting our fill of Santiago madness. Then when we visited Chiloé for the first time together, we naturally felt the need to move to this unique land where Nature, Mythology, and Culture mingle in so unparalleled way. We surveyed the island during months in search of the right spot. Simultaneous to this process was a project of self-sustenance based on renewal energies all of which would be part of our lives once settled. The place short-listing process met a hasty end when Chepu came in front of our eyes: this was the place we were looking for. Years of hard-working during which we had to master knowledge and abilities to cope with starting from an absolute zero, since we did not know anything about country life …uf! Now, we are able to see that backbone-breaking period as the one when the seeds of the present satisfaction were sown. After all these years we are proud to introduce “Chepu Adventures” as a leading company promoting the knowledge and protection of nature through low-impact outdoors activities as kayaking, trekking, eco-lodging, bird watching, and photography available to anyone. We feel that sharing nature is a way to preserve it: If you know it, you love it - when you love it, you take care of it !
