How this holiday makes a difference

Yiannis, the owner, does all his cooking in two clay ovens and this simple method produces an astonishing range of traditional dishes from organic locally grown ingredients. This is a family run business and cottages built by the family using local building materials and some materials from old buildings.

The furniture in the taverna was produced by local craftsmen using traditional techniques. The taverna at uses all local produce, much of it from the owners own gardens.

Cooking is done in a traditional way in the outdoor oven. The information pack at the cottages and our country representative promote many of the local mini-markets, tavernas and businesses to ensure that local people receive maximum economic benefit from tourist income.

Company policy:

As a company we aim to encourage local economic growth and to work in harmony with local communities and to respect their culture, traditions and environments. All of our owners (bar one) and suppliers used are local.

We prefer to employ the services of independent local business as suppliers in each of their destinations. We work with local car hire firms for all our car rentals, boat hire firms for boat rental and we utilize the services of local village shops and mini markets to compile our welcome hampers.

We also encourage our guests to use the services of local restaurants and shops, archeological sites/excursions - always booking through locals rather than large multi national companies. In addition to this we encourage our guests to visit local attractions and beaches within the area they are staying, as opposed to suggesting they go further afield.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The immediate feeling of peace upon entering the Manona suite. The view from the terrace across the bay towards Ithaca. Watching the yachts and occasional floating gin palace sail by.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you get the chance book a day on the Marine Adventure. This boat trip is run by an English Marine Biologist and he is enthusiastic and well-informed.

The local wine is really rather drinkable - no need to pay extortionate prices.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes as we were self-catering. We used local bakeries and supermarkets. We also ate out a couple of times.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We specifically chose this holiday for relaxation (I had just finished exams). Staying at the Manona Suite was perfect and the whole holiday was blissful.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The gorgeous views of the sea from our apartment.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take neoprene shoes - as always! - as the beaches are mostly stone/pebbles.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Can't pick only one! The pool area with stunning views over the coast with a lovely refreshing breeze. Hiring a motor boat and spending the day snorkelling and swimming in secluded little coves along the coast line.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book Daphnne over Tia as you will have sea views from your terrace. This was a fantastically peaceful and beautiful venue, but not right for anyone wanting busy nightlife. Be aware that wasps can be a nuisance when eating outside in July when we went.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not sure. We were surprised not to see any solar panels around for water heating.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Nine and a half out of ten. We had a perfect, relaxing holiday, the car was ideal, the cottage was spacious and relaxing, there were nearby tavernas for eating out and the pool area was fab. (To get the extra half point we needed the rep to sort out the few things missing in our cottage - but this was very minor.)

Read the operator's response here:

We are delighted Mr & Mrs Buckell enjoyed their stay at the Aloni Cottages and we hope to make up the missing half point on their next holiday with us! The solar panels for water heating were added after the original building of the cottages and are located in a plot of land adjacent to the cottages, but out of view. It is most common in Greece for these types of panels to be added on the roof of buildings, but the owners did not want to detract from the attractiveness of their cottages, hence the decision to hide the solar panels next door.
