Environment
WATER: In Cayman water is a especially a precious commodity. We try conserve on washing by asking guests to leave towels on the floor that they would like washed & hang up ones that can be reused. The sheets are washed every 2nd day unless the guest requests otherwise, or even more preferrablely, every 3rd day if OK'd by the guest.
ENERGY: All rooms have signs requesting guests to turn off lights & fans before leaving their rooms to sut down on unnecessary electrical use. The A/C is kept at a comfortable degree (not freezing!) and on cooler days we like to turn off the A/C & let guests experience the lovely Cayman Breeze.
WASTE: Island's have a challenge with waste so we recycle all that we can with our limited resources. We encourage our guests not to buy large amounts of bottled water but to bring their reusable water bottle & refill it with filtered water instead. Also you can order TAP water at a retaurant instead of bottled water as our tap water IS very safe to drink.
WILDLIFE: Left over fruit scaps from breakfast are used to feed the local iguans that reside at Shangri-La. The guests love spotting them walk about the property, they are harmless & will just jump in the lake if you get to close to them!
Community
Friends & Neighbours: We are very familiar with the best local restaurants just minutes from Shangri-La or some a short frive away. Just ask us & we would love to help you find the best locally caught fish on the Island, local cuisine, or even the best Italian. There are also many nearby boat charters for fishing, snorkelling, diving or sunset watching! One big local attraction is the Turtle Farm where you can learn about Cayman's long time commitment to preserving the sea turtle & even snorkel with them.
Don't forget to swim with the stingrays, our stingrays are friendly if treated with respect & love to be fed, handled & even KISSED by the tourists!
Campaigning for Change: In Cayman we have limited resourses for recyclling. We have made many calls & sent emails to our goverment officials asking for help in bringing more recyclling options to Cayman. Slowly this is starting to happen as we try to catch up with the rest of the world! We now recycle alluminum cans, scap metal, batteries, tires and plastic (at some locations). We also always use our clothes bags at the grocery store instead of plastic. Now all we need is a Car Pool system to cut down on the morning traffic commute to George Town. As we say in Cayman, Soon Come!
CHARITY: Shangri-La has always helped with local charities from The Breast Cancer Foundation, to Humane Society & even a local school to help raise money for new baseball uniforms. On countless occasions we have given away a free night at our B&B so the charity can auction it off to raise money for their event. We have never said no to a local charity in need.
