Kalkan accommodation, Turkey

How this holiday makes a difference

At our Kalkan accommodation we buy all our produce (meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy, fish) locally, and where possible use fruit and vegetables grown organically in our own gardens. We try to encourage others, both visitors and locals, to adopt organic practices.

Erol was born & bred in this village, and this is the first new enterprise to be started here for many years. We were first to restore one of the old traditional farmhouses, then opened it as a small hotel, the only one in the village. All materials used in restoration and in building our own house next door are local and in keeping with the village, and we used all local workmen.

We bring only small groups to our Kalkan accommodation which do not disrupt village life, and try to preserve and promote the area's culture and traditions, and to discourage inappropriate development or speculation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Visiting the property in the village of Bezirgan was like stepping through a door into another world. Pauline is a mine of useful information which allowed us to see things the Turkish way. Walking out straight into the village and surrounding hills allows you to immediately immerse yourself in the local culture, landscape and wildlife. Driving further afield down valleys surrounded by snow capped mountains revealed a glimpse of the huge country that Turkey is.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We went in mid April when the land was green and warm and the migrant birds were beginning to arrive. The nights and early mornings were still chilly, so take a mixture of summer and warm clothes for when you venture out. Try to do some background reading of Turkish history and the local historical sites.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - the local produce was all around us. You can easily spend the day without using a car and the people throughout the village and in the rest of Turkey were always very friendly, despite our very restricted knowledge of Turkish. Erol's cooking was first class and we ate in the property every evening.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good - lots of great memories to keep us going until our next adventure.

This is a wonderful place, very tranquil and relaxing, unless you dislike country sounds (cockerels crowing, goats bleating and of course the hooting of owls at night!). We absolutely loved it and think anyone with a soul would do so too! The guesthouse is simple but traditional and very beautiful. Lounge on the comfy cushions on the shaded wooden balconies and feel truly relaxed, or if you feel more active venture out for walks - the villagers will welcome you with friendly interest.

This accommodation would make a great base for exploring this beautiful area but we just booked two nights as a contrast to our holiday in Kalkan on the Lycian coast.

Erol's cooking and willingness to share his family and village history, and Pauline's bright wit and well-informed conversation enhanced our stay enormously. They have lots of animals that they have rescued, but there's plenty of land for them all to wander and they are all well-behaved and delightful.

Stay for Erol's traditional Turkish cookery course if you possibly can! We are still cooking wonderful Turkish-style meals - the spice seller in the market at Kalkan did very well out of what we learned from Erol!

Altogether a fantastic experience and a wonderful contrast to our main holiday by the coast in Kalkan - which also was beautiful but felt like a metropolis when we returned there! We'd love to go back some day and felt that we had made real friends.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The friendly people that we met. We felt that we had made new friends by the time that we left. We learnt a lot more about the country than we would have done staying in more touristy hotels.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for steep winding roads to this place. Make an effort to learn a few words of Turkish.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

We had a fantastic stay with Erol and Pauline. The accommodation was really comfortable, the meals were excellent and Erol and Pauline made us very welcome. My wife is vegetarian and really appreciated the veggie dishes Erol cooked, a welcome relief for us both from the meat orientated cuisine on the coast. We only had 2 nights; if we had stayed longer we would have needed a car to explore the area more. But it was a really nice break, such a contrast in culture and climate from the coast, so we are really glad that we found them with your help. Many thanks.

We had a wonderful time there. The place is just perfect for couples who want to rest and have a little bit of quiet.

The accommodation is very simple with beautiful rooms and quiet and beautiful surroundings. The hosts: Pauline and Errol - are extremely nice and make the place very hospitable. The food is superb.

You could be there and doing nothing, just resting or you can drive 20-30 minutes to the nearer beach, restaurant or a little further to many natural places to see.
