Peloponnese self catering accommodation, Greece
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We buy all our food (meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy, fish) locally, and where possible use fruit and vegetables grown organically in our own garden. Also our olive trees are grown organicaly and produce an excellent biological oil (for sale for our guests) and the famous Kalamata olives. We have a compost heap for vegetable waste.
We try to encourage others, both visitors and locals, to adopt organic practices.
We reduce our energy and have solar panels for the hot water so we don't need any other energy to supply for it. Information is available to guests about the recycling of water and waste in the house. People are encouraged to save water. There are no baths but showers and half flush toilets.
There is recycling of glass, plastic and paper waste in special containers.
We help to clean the beaches and we were volunteering to keep the lagoon of Gialova ( a project of Natura 2000) from deterioreting so that the wildlife could be maintained; here we find 200 species of birds, cameleons and the Kareta Kareta turtle. We developed a program for the local schools so that the children would learn about how to conserve wildlife and to help protect the environment. We encourage people to visit the lagoon and to support the organisation.
Community
The local community is central to our success in supporting our business and help in servicing the needs of our clients. We employ local people, use local suppliers and products. We provide a detailed guide for our guests to make the most of the local area and tavernas. By being successful in our business, we can demonstrate to the world the beauty of the area and enhance our local community with its traditions, customs and values.
Also we promote local products, art crafts and handicrafts from our area.
Being ourselves great animal lovers, we adopted 4 stray cats, we also have in this vicinity quite interesting wild animals and birds and do our outmost to preserve them.
The protection of the environment for us is not only to carry out our civil duty, but a principal that guides us, which we want to enforce and share with like-minded people and unions. Whenever there are plans to start big hotels or factories that would spoil the environment, we support the local community in their protests, go to meetings, write letters etc.
This part of the Peloponnese is still uncontaminated and there is no mass tourism; we inform our guests about walking paths and encourage them to go by foot instead of using the car!
