Most of the hotels of this trip are community-based: some give all; some give a part of the profit to benefit the local community. As none of the hotels belong to International Hotel Chains none of the earnings go abroad. It benefits 100% the Kenyan economy. For the dancers and guides we do not use the professionals, but we give the local boys and house-wives an opportunity to earn a little extra.
The trip supports local projects in two ways: direct as the guides and dancers in the cultural trip are from a local community based organizations; indirect as the total net profit of the Impala Circle Tour benefits the Isiolo Community Home for Children with Disabilities and the Maralal Disabled Children’s Home.
The entrance fees of the National Parks we visit benefit the KWS. The mission of KWS is conservation of the wild-life. Our tour-leaders have an official certificate from the Kenyan Association of Tour Leaders. To obtain this certificate they have followed a course at KWS of at least 2 years. Responsible and sustainable tourism is an important issue at these courses.
The tour-leaders give more briefings, but always on the spot. E.g. when they have had a Safari-lunch inside the Game Park, they not only collect litter so there is no trace of humans remaining, but also tell the guests why it is important and the awful things happen to the wild life if you leave litter.
Our attitude towards responsible and sustainable tourism is much more than a professional attitude: it is our life-style. In the office we put off the computers and lights at night; we collect worn-out batteries to dispose them properly; we have separated garbage disposal; we use as much as possible the draft-mode of the printer and so on. The group size is maximum of 8 people and that makes it easy to have a lot of contact with the local communities. We do our utmost best to minimize the negative impact of our journeys on the environment.
