Responsible tourism: Copenhagen city centre boutique hotel, Denmark

The environment and social responsibility are two key areas of fundamental awareness for the management and staff at the Avenue.

It is the intention of the management that “the Avenue feeling” should powerfully and visibly convey the philosophy behind the Avenue Hotel that is defined as a boutique hotel. A boutique hotel provides its guests with much more than just a comfortable room. It provides them with an experience: Friendly atmosphere, staff, design, and food – all the things that make you feel comfortable, at home. In order to bring the philosophy to actions, we have recorded the following statements, which will be revised regularly in order to meet new challenges.

For us, preserving the environment has high priority, but does not necessarily mean, for example, that all products have to be organic. Before taking the decision to purchase any product intended for use in the day-to-day operation of the Avenue we take many parameters into consideration:

- Production methods, packaging and transportation
- Sorting and Recycling of waste
- Environmental friendly use of energy and water

In order to ensure that all staff are fully informed and trained to work after the Avenue philosophy and rules, they attend various courses and lectures arranged by the Avenue Academy throughout the year. This also gives them the feeling of being a member of the Avenue family.

Furthermore, The Avenue Hotel has been awarded with the worldwide eco-label, Green Key. By obtaining the Green Key we show a sense of responsibility for our surroundings and society. In order to obtain The Green Key a company has to fulfill a list of environmental requirements such as:

- The hotel must comply with national environmental legislation.
- The establishment must separate waste into the categories that can be handled separately by the local or national waste management facilities.
- At least 50% of the light bulbs must be energy efficient.
- Heating, air-conditioning, and other electric devices must be based on time schedules for when the accommodation facilities are not in use.

At the Avenue we believe that social responsibility should apply both at home and away from home. It is imperative to “the Avenue feeling” that all our dealings with staff, business partners and suppliers are carried out in a socially responsible manner, in areas such as:

- The hotel informs its guest about local public transportation systems and other alternatives.
- Purchase of fair trade, locally produced and organic goods where feasible Correct handling of all financial transactions
- The wine supplier of of the house Barrique vin, delivers CO2 neutral products
- Creating an attractive place of work that will appeal to international, young, ambitious people, who are aware of the importance of a good environment and social responsibility
- On-going training of staff in order to maintain and strengthen the philosophy behind “the Avenue feeling”
- Support a named charity organisation
- Our laundry service is certified ISO 22000, OHSAS 18001, DS 14065, DS 2451-8 and ISO 14001

It is our hope that by making these commitments, we can give our guests, customers and other stakeholders full confidence in the service and products we provide, and that they are based on solid principles of social, environmental and economic responsibility.

In 2012 Avenue Hotel supports the charity organization named "", which supports poor children in Denmark, by giving these the children the opportunity of different cultural experiences.
