Responsible tourism: Self catering farmstay in Denmark

Environment

We run our farm organically; This means that we use no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemical additives. We aim to keep our animals under conditions that ensure them as high a level of animal welfare as possible for domestic animals, and we feed them a natural diet, using only food produced here on the farm, and buy only a mineral supplement. For the kitchen we produce our own organic meat, grain, eggs, vegetables and berries/fruits, and we collect wild plants and berries from the nature around us. We buy milkproducts from the local organic dairy "Naturmælk", and we buy honey and vegetables from local organic producers in the area, as we do not produce these ourselves. All waste from the kitchen is recycled on the farm as animal food or kompost, and our guests are asked to sort their waste from the apartments as well. We use only environmently friendly products for cleaning, and we ask our guests to bring environmently friendly products in their toiletbags We heat the farm with local wood, partly from our own woods, and with solar heaters, and we have a biological cleaning system for waste water. We have renovated and restored the farm over the last 15 years, using natural buildingmaterials as wood and bricks, trying to be true to the old buildings we own, to preserve them and maintain them as original as possible.

Community

We buy as many things as possible from the local community. In addition to that we have a small farmshop where our guests can buy local products together with the products from our own farm. We cooperate with the village in many ways; we are part of a group of volunteers from the local village who have created a number of paths through the local nature area, following our fields and the small river all the way to the village and into the local woods, allowing locals as well as tourist to explore the nature and choose different length of paths. Some of the paths are also used for running, horseriding and cycling. We host events on the farm involving the village, including a big christmas party in the middle of december, and different arrangements which follow the seasons on the farm. We take school classes and groups of adults for famvisits to teach them about organic agriculture and other related subjects. We participate in local networks of farmers and organic producers, and we encourage our guests to visit some of the other local farmshops or restaurants. We try to tell the story of this part of Denmark to our guests; the history as well as the culture, and we encourage our visitors to explore the area and help them with the neccesary information alng with information about local events.
