How this holiday makes a difference

To honor my host culture, the Hawaiian people, to honor the aina, the land of Hawaii, is what is important to me. Change is happening for all of us, but it does not have to mean that it will bring a loss. To respect the land, to conserve and maintain the beauty that is unique to Hawaii is my personal goal. I have restored a few older homes, and am honoured to receive guests in one of these gems.

Over breakfast, cultural questions are often asked, and I try to offer a sense of how to be in Hawaii with respect to local customs and an awareness of the varied cultures that call Hawaii home. I offer guests the opportunity to “give back” while on their vacations through a program I call Voluntourism. I will connect guest with organizations that do reforestation work and restoration work. I encourage guests to shop locally whenever possible. We request that guests shop “mom and pop” whenever possible. We especially support local artisans, display and sell their works, let guests know where they can buy local arts and crafts, and sell local jams and jellies.

We offer nights for fund raisers for Historic Societies of Maui and Oahu, as well as the canoe clubs, and select schools, and Humane Society. Listed on the State and National Historic registers, offering a pictorial and written history of Portuguese immigrants and highlighting the original family, who held their family reunion in this Maui bed and breakfast.

We use energy saving light bulbs where possible, line dry laundry when possible, use chemical free cleaning products, compost in the garden all breakfast food and grow organic fruits. We recycle whenever possible, plastic, glass and cans, and cardboard. We restored historic home to minimise impact. We used down trees to create lumber for new construction.
