We live in a big town and Italy’s politics is far from encouraging people to respect the environment. It is also important to emphasize that although Italy is the first organic producer, only scarcely 10% of the total Italian population use organic or ecological food/products. On our side we try to do all is possible to do: we own only one car and one motorbike, we are vegetarian, we do not buy any plastic bottle of water because we use Brita water filter and all the apartments have been painted with natural paints.
Barbara is a voluntary at a nearby hospital (Gemelli Hospital). In our shop we try to give information about ecology. Michele is an Herbalist and for 13 years his main purpose is to make clients aware about eating properly and taking care of themselves with natural medicines like ayurveda, in fact he works together with an ayurvedic Indian doctor head of an Indian Hospital in Bangalore, India. In Michele's shop there are also fair trade products and books about organic way of living and all books about getting conscious of yourself and the environment.
Through our Rome B&B we support the project bal asharam with the anjali association in Benares, India. Since 2005 they have taken care of homeless kids giving them the chance to give them free school, medical care, food and live their lives in better conditions. We also send money to emergency funds. We tell guests where to go to eat organic food. We change sheets and towels every 4th day unless different requests. We use eco cleaning products such as Almacabio, Solas, Osiris, Sonett and Ecor. We use them also in the guests area. We use Ecor washing powder. We don’t use any chemicals on our plants, use only ecological fertilizers and we put some cereal to welcome birds on our terrace. We are very happy to have a geko family with us!
We recycle glass, paper, plastic, aluminum, batteries and waste food. we use recycled print cartridges. We are able to run the B&B just the two on us. Fortunately Michele is quite good with building electrics and plumbing so we mainly do all the work in our house by ourselves. All fruit and vegetables are seasonal and always preferably as close as possible grown near Rome. We produce our own yogurt made with organic milk.
