How this holiday makes a difference

James is a volunteer driver and committee member for the West Dart Bus, which provides transport to town for shopping etc from local villages. Rosie and James are both members of Blackawton Parochial Church Council, organising and supporting the work of St Michael’s Church, Blackawton.

We have energy saving light bulbs throughout, where practical and energy and water consumption is monitored monthly by unit. Cistern water misers have been installed. Rainwater is collected from one butt and we have a stream and pond so water for the garden is readily available. All bedrooms have showers, there is only one bath available and all cisterns are on half flush. We plan to use water from our well throughout when funds permit. All glass, plastic, metal, paper and biodegradable refuse is recycled. Cottages are advised what they must do regarding recycling waste. We use Ecover products including washing up liquid.

We use our own compost which includes manure from our hens and when housed inside, our sheep. We feed toast and bread to our hens, and scraps to the dog and cat. Our waste system is a biological treatment plant. We are members of the RSPB Farm Alliance through which a survey of bird life has been done on our farm, the details of which (over 35 species identified) are for our guests to see. Our pond is protected against roadwater runoff pollution by a series of diverting pipes, and a leat for silt collecting. Our bats are long eared and pipistrelle. We are in the Habitat Scheme (Option 1a and 2a) for minimising cultivation at the edge of a stream.

Our guests are encouraged to eat and drink locally and to visit the nearest attractions of which there are many. Our hens lay eggs used for breakfast. We sell our own lamb, wool sheepskin rugs and blankets. We make our own bread, yoghurt, jam and marmalade. All other consumables are purchased and as far as possible made or reared locally. Our cleaner and gardener are local, as are contractors when required.
