How East Jamaica budget beach resort makes a difference

Environment

We minimize our electricity consumption by using energy efficient light bulbs and we look by purchasing appliances what there energy usage is. We turn off as much as possible energy-using appliances and lights, if not in use. We also use lights what only turn on by registering a movement. We collect rainwater in 1 tank and this support all the water (except the drinking water) what our guests use in showers, toilets and basins. We have our own compost from collecting all our green garbage.

We encourage wild life in our garden by planting a lot of flowers what bloom different times in the year and this attract a big amount of birds, butterflies and insects. We also have feeders hanging for the humming birds. We have no pond but sea and get visit regular from a family of 6 manatees. We collect all our green garbage what we compost and use this later back by potting plants or flowers. All our food waste goes to the dogs and cat and they eat from chicken bones, fish bones including lobster skin, rice, vegetables etc.

We recycle all our plastic waste and glass waste, we collect it and 2 times a year I carry it to Kingston where it get shredded and exported. All our drinks are sold in glass bottles (no plastic or tins) and these are money back bottles. The jam bottles go back to the sales person what use them again. We also collect all our egg boxes and they go back to the place where I buy them. Old steel and iron goes to the steel man in the community what sells this and makes so his living. We collect all our bottle stops and collect them to make something out of them.

Community

We still work close with the community people from Long Road and involve them so much as possible with jobs like guiding, hear breathing, transportation etc.

We support the community to buy so much as our needs are in the community like purchasing goods in the local supermarket, fish from the local fisherman, car maintenance etc. Every year we donate money for sports days, net ball club and family fun days etc. We often take our guests out to these events so in that way they support that day by buying drinks, food etc from the local stands, bars.

We send all our guests out in the community to get a taste of real Jamaica. Also we only sell basic drinks and no snacks, so that our guests go out in the community to buy their things there. Also we send our guests to local restaurants where they serve local produce. Our guests get encouraged by us to buy (if interested) craft items in the nearby communities. We send our guests of the Jamaica beach resort accommodation to local events and parties, what really gives you a true look in the Jamaican culture.

We employ local staff (2 persons, 1 cook and 1 house help on a daily basis, 5 days a week, 1 person 2 days a week for gardening and 1 person to wash the car once a while) they are all coming from this community where they born and grown. My 2 regular employees go almost every year on course what bring them more skills and meet other people with the same profession. It upgrades their life and they give also an example for other people in our community.

We organise every year a project for the community like clean up day. Also we buy most of our daily needs, like fish, meat and other grocery in our community. Guests at this Jamaica beach resort accommodation spend their money in the community when they go out or going to parties. All our employees and maintenance workers come out of our community.

The story of the provider of East Jamaica budget beach resort

I, Free-I started to build Zion Country from scratch till what it is today. I came from the Netherlands in 1995 and created this little paradise on a 3/4 acre beach property. We rebuild Zion Country in 2008 when it was badly damaged by hurricane Gustave. Zion Country have a personal touch towards it's visitors from all over the world and many describe it as a place what is home to them. One love Free-I and the Zion Country crew: Owen and Tamara.
