introduction to Berry accommodation, New South Wales
Berry accommodation, New South Wales.
A two hour drive south from Sydney brings you to the historic town of Berry on NSW's South Coast. Our Berry accommodation lies ten minutes from town in 135 acres of rolling rainforest, pasture and creeks.
A stilt house which elevates you to the tree tops, the cottage enjoys both total privacy and a spectacular outlook. Its wraparound deck has views which go on forever. You'll wake every morning to a Jurassic Park-soundtrack of birdsong, then perhaps swing in the hammock with only the call of the Whip birds to disturb you.
Despite our faraway feel, Berry with its antique shops and restaurants is less than a ten-minute drive away, as are fine-dining restaurants associated with the nearby wineries. You are also close to Seven Mile Beach National Park and the stunning beaches of Jervis Bay with their seasonal dolphin and whale watching. If you've had a full day sightseeing why not enjoy a bottle of wine on the deck, watching the sun set and the kookaburras call. The cottage is a fully self-contained holiday house.
Our Berry accommodation includes two bedrooms: one queensize bed in a large bedroom with its own deck and one double bedroom both supplied with quality linen and towels. The house is lovingly furnished and equipped with a kitchen, bathroom (with a bath and shower), potbelly stove, gas fire, sound system and TV/VCR.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
The Illawarra rainforest "the thickest jungle in the colony" (Allan Cunningham, Colonial Botanist, 1818), once covered the local region. Today, the Illawarra's native vegetation is sadly weed-infested. By 1997, when we bought our 135 acres, what were once rainforest creeks had become a sunless monoculture of privet. For the past seven years we have been regenerating these precious rainforest creeks and working hard to restore the native flora on all our property. It has taken tens of thousands of dollars and almost as many hours to return (so far) two of these creeks to a nascent rainforest, full of baby Red Cedar (Toona australis), the "red gold" logged almost to oblivion a century ago. The size of our bush regeneration project makes it a pioneering endeavour for private landholders.
As committed conservationists we have also entered into a Property Agreement keeping our land safe from development for ever. As well as conserving (and improving) the rainforest, it is hoped that this will provide a guaranteed sanctuary to threatened fauna including the Sooty owl, Long-nosed potoroo, Tiger quoll, Olive whistler and Stuttering Barred Frog. The success of our rainforest regeneration project has been recognised by the Federal Government in the award of an Envirofund Grant and by the local community. The Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest which now grows along our creeks is classified as an endangered vegetation community and the proceeds from your stay are spent helping to fund a team of bush regenerators who prevent the reinvasion of weeds onto the site. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
